posts Nena S. Bhatt on twitter posts before they become hard to find.
Kansas City MAX - very cool new bus system: bus only lanes, signal prioritization, gorgeous stations designed as landmarks.
MAX - high quality stations seem to be triggering TOD, very careful branding. People now asking for rail or a MAX line - Rick Scott
MAX Troost Line runs along historically segregated corridor in KC. People loving it. Operating costs for MAX similar to pre-MAX
Hybrid electric buses, 10 min headways, rain gardens, solar lighting, bike allowed in bus lanes - this is my kind of bus system!
MAX lessons - lack of off vehicle fare collection slows boarding, branding and bike or connections key, lane enforcement key
BRT is going to expand in the US. It is a cost efficient way to move people. More and more cities are exploring it. - BRT Tour
Economic development in distressed areas is tough. KC is using the MAX bus system to cluster development around stations.
KC is a car kind of place. But MAX and infill growth around MAX will boost econ development and create transit zones in urban core
BRT or rail? Cost savings, faster implementation are big advantages of BRT. Tried for 30 yrs to build rail, couldn't make costs work
BRT can be up and running in 2-3 yrs. - Rick Scott
Federal rail $$ also scarce. New Starts is very competitive, and much of the funds are spoken for.
KC BRT was done with no new local taxes.
Super tall bus stop markers visible 2 blocks away, have real time info, way finding, attractively lit at nite
MAX Bus stops are pretty cool. Attractive, large, real time info, maps, but no off vehicle are collection
Neat, you can sit facing the street or away from it - because wind and rain blow from different directions
Pervious pavement and stormwater management at park and ride. And concrete pads at every stop (KC gets cold)
