Kenny's News Room has closed down. That's what I know.

It says that Black and Gold Tavern is opening in this spot on New Years Eve. Wonder if Black and Gold Tavern is suppose to be some kind of Missouri themed tavern.

Also, the gay sports bar on Broadway Outabounds has closed up

Indeed, as I was told.

Black and Gold Tavern sounds promising. They are going to have over 40 different kinds of beers available to start out. Don't really like the Mizzou theme though

Bummer that it will no longer be a dive bar as it was one of my faves. Westport has turned much better ever since they started to cater to the 25+ midtowner crowd and less as a metro party zone for the college or ghetto crowd. P&L has really helped pull the party crowd out of Westport. A neighborhood sports bar is OK but if it tries to be a metro Mizzou party bar or something, ugh. Maybe it will still be a dive bar with a subtle Mizzou bent. That could work.

i really hope they aren't leaning too hard on the "mizzou" angle - if that can't work for willie's, one block from the P+L and sprint center, it sure as hell won't fly in stabtown.

Ironically, the News Room would have been a great name for a Mizzou J-School hangout.

Noticed today that the "Black and Gold Tavern" and a new "Vandals: Punk Rock Club" sign was up in its place. How long do you give it?

Yeah, I saw that. Looks like a rebranding. Considering they were trying to do music, this seems to make sense.

I don't give it long, but I hope they make it.

If memory serves, it was a pretty unpleasant place to see a band. Maybe the remodel mentioned on their facebook page will help.

I like the idea of a midtown punk venue here. I seem to recall that News Room used to have the odd punk/hardcore band play in the back but it's been a while.

Seems like punk clubs should probably not label themselves as such on their big front sign however, for underground points and authenticity, grit, etc.

It was really strange, but "Vandals" has been around for a while, though concerts were something like "Vandals at Black and Gold Tavern presents..." It made pretty much no sense to have an overtly college themed bar geared towards a punk crowd. It may have been a liquor license thing as with Local Pig/Bridgers.

Black and Gold Tavern finally submitted to the fact that KC is really a KU city. Doomed from the start. :-D

So the guys from Hamburger Mary's bought this location after their Kickstarter (or whatever it was) campaign raised less than $1000 out of $10000 to keep Vandals afloat. Turning it into a gay sports bar, which should free up a spot in the Uptown Shoppes they had slated for that.

A gay sports bar is punk rock in its own way.

Is the new Hamburger Mary's location small? Maybe they could just move to this location instead. It would be nice if the Plasma Center finally moves or closes up as a result.
