good bar to read a book?

People say they enjoy Kansas City. Find out why.

good bar to read a book?

Post by heatherkay »

I need to get out of the house for a few hours this evening. I'm in the middle of an awesome book right now, and I'd like to find somewhere that I can chill out, have a couple of beers, and read. Lots of bars are too dark or too loud. I don't mind making conversation if there's decent company, but, as a woman on my own, I don't want to pestered. Those of you that have a "third place," any suggestions? I can think of lots of coffee places, but nowhere that has a liquor license.

Tough one. I'd try a hotel bar.

That's a pretty good idea. More comfortable chairs, for sure.

Once Opera House is serving alcohol that would be a good spot. I'm pretty sure they'd either let you bring your own booze or give you some of their stash.

I like this question. I'll be ruminating on it for a bit...

Bluestem might be an option, too. I'll have to drive by and see (a) how busy and (b) how dark.

there was a woman reading at the grunauer bar on friday. pretty dark but she was right under one of the lamps.

my wife and i have read together at gilhouly's in one of the booths on an afternoon. it was fun.

lill's bar (go before it closes on the 22nd!)

westport cafe would be good - it's pretty light. same with the boot. both are typically quiet too.

I love Gilhouly's, but always seem to attract odd older men trying to pick me up. I'm sitting at Fric and Frac right now, and it looks like a winner for now. Lots of good suggestions, though, and those seats at the Ambassador look fantastic. I think this will be a weekly thing, so I've got a checklist now.

On a weekday at Haus might be good, its usually pretty quiet in there and they have some really comfortable chairs at the bar.

I might also suggest Harry's Country Club (not your neighborhood, I know). I've sat at the end of the bar nearest the windows a handful of times and read the newspaper quite peacefully. No one ever bothers me, although I'm not a lady.

That sounds pretty good, too. Love Harry's. And just to clarify, I can deal with a low level of pestering. The guys at Gilhouly's have been unusually persistent. Like biting flies.

Too late for last night, but what about Cellar and Loft? Is that place still open?

Also, what book?

I wasn't sure if Cellar and Loft was a bar or more a tasting area for wine sales. I thought it was more the latter.

I see that Side Street Bar all the time on my way home from Costco -- I figured it was a gay bar, but I wondered what kind of place it was. It looks nice.

I'm reading The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell. It's a historical novel set during the Dutch trading concession with Japan in the late 18th century.

The basement has some pretty loungey spaces, but I'm not sure what their business model is right now--if it's a club with dues or if anyone can drink there?
