Paris of the Plains! Popfest!

Post by KC Sporting Life »

The inaugural Paris of the Plains Cocktail Festival kicks off next week. We've got 6 days of dinners, cocktail parties, spirits tastings, concerts, educational seminars, and the Paris of the Plains Bartending Competition at The Uptown Theater, now in its 6th year. Check out our website, http://www.popfestkc.com for more info. But, to get things started, I want to share a copy of the original article written by Edward Morrow in the Omaha World-Herald that declared KC as "Paris of the Plains". It was dug up by local historian, John Simonson, who will also be giving a seminar on KC's history during that time period. Check this out:

Anyone know where the bar mentioned in that article that was that was half in MO and half in KS?

I'm also interested in where the 'Jackson Democratic Club' building is mentioned under the picture.

I think the Democratic Club building is right up the street from The Rieger and just underwent some sort of interior renovation.

The Last Chance Tavern was at 3205 Southwest Boulevard.

The Last Chance Saloon was on SW Blvd, on the State Line. It played a significant role in KC mob history. It was the last place where "the two Charlies", Charles Gargotta and Charles Binaggio, were seen alive before their infamous double murder in 1950, most likely at the hands of future mob boss Nick Civella.

[quote="pash"]The cocktail festival looks like a blast. Hopefully I will be back in town in time to catch the end of it.

And, Ryan, thanks for posting Murrow's famous article. I've looked around for it enough to think it doesn't exist anywhere else on the web.

You bet, there's so much happening next week all over the city, it's going to be great. All the cocktail parties, dinners, and music will be a blast, but I particularly want to emphasize the experts that we're bringing in from all over the world to teach our seminars. The Scotch tasting with Paul Pacult alone would be enough to generate some buzz. It's going to be great having so much internationally renowned talent in KC for a few days.

I'm very disappointed I'm out of town to miss it all. Hopefully some of you post pictures of events.

Is that event also a tasting? I didn't see any reference in the event summary, but I'm going regardless.

^^^Since it's a late night event, there will be light apps and Hors d'oeuvres passed. 5 Tanqueray cocktails on the menu. And of course Mark Lowrey and the New Jazz Order Big Band.

Sorry I should have been more specific. There will be a beer/wine cash bar on top of that. but the cocktail menu that night won't be the full menu that will be available once the venue is fully operational. This is just a sneak peek, soft opening party of sorts.
