Activists Unite!

I know of a dangerous intersection downtown, that for years public works said no to placing stop signs in order to make it safer for drivers and pedestrians.  (quote: " we do not use stop signs to calm traffic.".....????)

Well, amazingly one Sunday morning signs miraculously appeared.  Much safer for everyone.

Okay, so who's got access to a dozer?

cars back up during 1 hour of the weekday morning rush. this is likely due to uncoordinated signals at pennsylvania & w pennway, w pennway & sw blvd, broadway & sw blvd, 20th & sw blvd, 20th & broadway, or 20th & main. none of them are interconnected yet, so the city isn't effectively managing the current traffic flow.

if a car is headed east to crown center -- the most likely path in the morning rush -- it must go through 5 of those 6 signals. don't most people use 20th instead of pershing if exiting from I-35?

...the Wyandotte Board of Commissioners will consider adopting a "complete streets" resolution later this month. Reardon says the idea is to assess road repairs and new street projects beyond what's good for driving.

"The concept is, don't just look at the road as a place for the car," says Reardon. "What does that mean to connectivity of people? Are you paying attention to the sidewalk? Are you paying attention to where bikes might be? Are you paying attention to where transit interacts with the street?"
Are you paying attention KCMO Public Works?

Unlikely.

Wait didn't KCMO just pass a "complete streets" initiative?

A few posts back DaveKCMO stated the following:
alas, the project hits its first snag... public works refuses to move forward unless the plan includes an option for four traffic lanes. we're working on a trump card!

like many resolutions, KCMO's "complete streets" ordinance is non-binding: 110069

Wrote to my councilwoman asking her to support this project and help get rid of the road blocks it may face, two weeks later no answer.

the city plan commission unanimously approved the project this week! it includes a 4-lane option, but the 3-lane road diet + bike lane is the recommendation. it's the crossroads' #1 priority for PIAC, so please email the mayor and council members (even if you're not in the 4th district) and let them know you think this should be a priority for funding.

TIF commission approved an amendment yesterday to the 22nd & Main TIF plan (what "built" the freighthouse district). this improves the chances for PIAC funding (it's #2 on the greater downtown PIAC list). hopefully, the grand boulevard cycletrack could connect with the bike lanes on 20th, then to bike lanes on southwest blvd that KCK is planning. real connectivity!

the next step (construction documents) was funded by combination of an existing TIF and PIAC. this typically indicates the city's intent to actually complete the project and would make the project "shovel ready". some federal grants are being sought to help with construction of phase 1 (central to mcgee), currently estimated to cost $5 million.

it remains the crossroads #1 infrastructure priority.

But starting next spring, the five-block stretch of 20th Street through the heart of the Crossroads from McGee Street to Southwest Boulevard is scheduled for a $4.2 million makeover. Traffic lanes will be reduced to three, sidewalks widened, bike lanes added, trees and benches installed, and those vegetation-encased medians removed.

Good news Welsh-Americans! 20th street improvements include Corgis!
