That was about the least sketchy part of East St. Louis, although a lot of the city has been reclaimed by nature. I can't get into why I know this, but I saw what was probably the most valuable, as in culturally valuable and probably worth a huge amount of money by the right buyer, [vinyl] record collection I've ever seen in a basement there.

It doesn't look tuff to me, though I know it must be. Looks more like a rural ghost town.

Fun fact: East St. Louis is 96% black. Perhaps the blackest city in the US, the world?

Also, the place had around 70,000 people in 1970 (when most industrial cities had their peak population within their original boundaries). Now the population is around 30,000.

Some of the demographics are surprisingly positive considering the above.

there are small towns that are 100% african american in the mississippi delta.

30 k black folk, 500 hundred whites n 200 latinos living in east stl,illinois

i imagine that because of nature obscuring, that alot of the streets are hard to get to?

one a side note, i saw they are decounstructing the church on 23rd n benton....which east st louis makes benton boulevard look stately in comparision...which benton is, rather lovely homes on that stretch,
