Kansas City benefits from the fact that there aren't many big cities close by. St. Louis is 5 hours away, and Denver is 12 hours away by car. Minneapolis, Chicago, adn Dallas are also a great distance.

KC pulls in a lot of gay people from the center of the country (rural and southern Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa). KC metro is much bigger than cities like Little Rock, Omaha, Springfield, Des Moines, Wichita, Topeka, and Tulsa. A lot of gays move here instead of those cities because the gay community here is a bit larger. The variety of jobs is greater here too.

Other contributing factors might be that many people from small towns just don't want to live in larger cities like Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. They also might be unwilling to live far from their families. This makes KC a good regional choice among gay people. At the risk of appearing stereotypical, I think having the Art Institute, and employers like Hallmark and Sprint here also contribute. The creative class contributes to a more tolerant atmosphere.

There is no fifth destination.

You are right about the Art Institue and Sprint and Hallmark. Most the metro areas larger employers are places where a more diverse population would feel comfortable working. For a "conservative" midwestern city, KC has a surprisingly progressive attitude towards the gay and lesbian community.
Are you sure we're talking about the same God here, because yours sounds kind of like a dick.

I used to write about KC's jazz history and ran into the gay history along the way. KC has a more significant gay history than most cities, even SF.

Back in the late 1800's there was an annual parade where it was considered too streneous for women so men dressed up as women (there are pictures on the library site). This attracted cross-dressers from everywhere for several decades. By the time the jazz scene hit full swing and clubs were ignoring the Prohibition, many caberet clubs booked female impersonator dancers but did not announce to the audience. There were quite of few of these pre-drag cabaret clubs. By the early 30's, an 'all girls hotel' opened up... indirectly known as 'Lesbos Inn'. It opened several years before San Francisco's first lesbian bar.

Just a few tidbits...
