Big 12 Football 2008
2008 is underway and the old thread was 141 pages long so how about a fresh thread for 08?
Most Big 12 teams came out pretty unscathed....couple injuries but doesn't sound like anything too serious.
Of the local teams, it appears KU has the toughest week 2...anybody know anything about any of their opponents? KSU plays FCS Montana St, who sounds like a pretty good FCS team....hopefully Josh can get out of the game again in the 3rd quarter with 5 TD's in his pocket and no INTs.

Re: Big 12 Football 2008
All 3 local teams (KU, MU, & KSU) did very well in Week 1. There are positives and negatives on all 3 teams, but I think all fans need can be happy with their teams' performance.
As for MU , they looked rough at times, but still managed to beat a Top 20 team. I think Mizzou fans should take this win over an "arch rival" and enjoy it.
GO MIZZOU!

A couple sweet plays from KU's game. Daymond Patterson should be a huge boost for our kick-off/punt returns.

Let's make a pact to refuse to talk about cup-cake game results. The only game that needs discussion in the Big 12 was the MU game. (Well, an ATM's loss to Ark State, hahahaha!)

If we did that, then this thread wouldn't make it to page 2 until November.Maitre D wrote: Let's make a pact to refuse to talk about cup-cake game results.

Re: Big 12 Football 2008
KU will have a tougher than normal match-up with LA Tech this weekend. It seems like we play this team nearly every season, but usually they're a push-over. They beat Mississippi St. 22-14, and MSU was an 8-5 team last season. If anything though, it will just make our resume that much better...seeing as LA Tech is projected to go to a bowl this season.
S. Fla. killed Tennessee-Martin 56-7. I can't wait for that game.

With all of this talk about field goal kicking it was nice to see Wolfert get out there and smoothly knock in a 51 yarder.

I'm starting to like MU's chances of beating OU in the Big 12 Championship game (if it comes to that):

Seriously, where is MD on this one? If this were Mizzou or KSU he would have already posted 100 times on this subject alone.

Re: Big 12 Football
I thought the offense looked great, I thought their defense looked terrible at times. I know Illinois has a good offense, but still they seemed to get big plays at will. At least they have a few weeks off now to fix it. I love teams that start the year off with a tough challenge like this. Takes some balls.AllThingsKC wrote: As expected, Mizzou beats Illinios. But, it wasn't pretty. MU's offense looked questionable at times. It was the special teams and defense that help score some points.
The crowd of 66,000+ was the largest crowd in Edward Jones Dome history. What does that say about the Rams?
And, the ESPN were very bias for Illinois. They even called UI "our guys."
KU fans who went to the game that I talked to seemed fairly impressed, but one surprising thing a lot of them seem to be talking about is the kicker? Apparently the kicker/punter has a strong leg and will be an asset this year.
KSU fans I talked to were super impressed.
But its early.

Enjoy it, Josh, because you might not have another one this season.

Re: Big 12 Football 2008
KU definitely has a lot of work and fine tuning to do on offense (as mentioned by 100 others). The play calling was uninspired, and losing Fine and McAnderson were bigger issues than I initially thought they would be. Sharp is not a grind-it-out feature back, and he isn't the type of guy who can cram the ball up the middle for a clutch 2 or 3 yards. Last year he was most effective when he came in after McAnderson had worn the defense down or when he was run outside the tackles. Prediction: Quigley will get more than 6 carries next Saturday. I really don't think the O-line was as bad as some have said, but they definitely have to improve. Mostly, I think we need to get better pick-ups from the backs and tight ends (ala Fine/McAnderson). FIU had a run blitz on almost the rest of the game after drive #1, so we dinked and dunked our way to victory (Reesing set career highs in completions and attempts with only 256 passing yards). I was pleased with our receivers who haven't shown a regression to 2006 and prior's butterfingers.
The defense was terrific and has a chance to be even better than last season's, probably not statistically with the tougher schedule, but we have better depth, and our secondary as a whole may be better. We only gave up 3 points (7 on special teams), and continued to stay solid as the lead grew when we could have lost focus. Our kick coverage, however, was pretty sad at times. Odd that after playing Va. Tech last year, we aren't better from that perspective.

Re: Big 12 Football 2008
Still pretty meaningless. Mizzou is the only Big XII school that deserves its ranking as of yet. We will have to wait a while to see if the others belong (OU perhaps this weekend vs. Cincy, UT perhaps week 3 vs. Arkansas, KU week 3 vs. So. Fla., Tech week 5 vs. KSU or possibly @ Nevada week 2).
By the way... this Nevada @ MU game looks a bit more interesting now and is perhaps (not unlike La Tech for KU) more of a minor test than a gimme as previously thought. They get a home match-up against Texas Tech first, so MU will see if they are pretenders, while Nevada will have played against a very solid Big XII team.

But, Kansas probably cheated. Or their players got high. Or they only won because of their fat coach. So, Kansas can be co-#7.KCMax wrote: Kansas has the exact same record!

Might want to plug those gapping holes in your secondary first.

Play a 1-A team then you can come back here.CrimsonInKC wrote:

I think the Nevada and Buffalo games will both provide above average competition as far as "filler" games go. Definately above the FIU, SEMO, North Texas teams of the world. Of course Mizzou should win both games easily, but they should also keep the team sharp unlike many of the waste of time games that take place in September.bobbyhawks wrote: Still pretty meaningless. Don't worry. I'm compiling an entire list of excuses in the event Mizzou actually wins something for once.AllThingsKC wrote: But, Kansas probably cheated. Or their players got high. Or they only won because of their fat coach. So, Kansas can be co-#7.
Their fans shouldn't have a monopoly on being crybaby losers. I can and will, do it just as well. (Should the miraculous happen finally)
