Weekend Trip to Nebraska

Post by PumpkinStalker »

Friday the girlfriend and I headed out to Nebraska to see her extended family.  Quite a few cool buildings on the drive.

At our hotel in Grand Island, this sign was pretty awesome.

Not much time to explore GI, so we are heading back through Lincoln...
An awesome 3-D mural made out of brick/clay that was carved, then fired, then assembled as you see.
Image

Lincoln has an area that is a cross between our city-market and crossroads that is pretty awesome, filled with upperscale restaurants, art galleries, brew pubs, parks, etc.

I wish KC had more clubs below street level like this one.

Inside their old train station.  Now houses banquet facility, visitors bureau, and an upscale restaurant.

This is in a little town called Auburn

Very strange architecture

Probably an old hotel, now apartments

Awesome old bank building!

The detail on this one doesn't show up well, but there are some awesome carvings in the stone/cement on this building.

That is a really cool mural.  Someone put some serious work into that.

It's badass, you can see the 3-D down at the bottom where the scoop of the train is sticking out in the flower bed.  From a distance it's awesome, but get up close and it's absolutely amazing.  I'm not sure how they did that, but it is made up of individual bricks, with mortar inbetween, but each brick is carved to be a piece of the whole.

How was the new 75 bypass through Sabetha?

Wow Auburn! I have family there and actually just around the corner from where you were shooting those pictures. Auburn is a shit whole. It's the fastest shrinking town in Nebraska.

I actually really like Auburn. Hell I'd never live there, they probably couldn't afford me, but it's an excellent, quaint little town IMO..I always enjoy the scenery in the area around the Nebraska/Kansas border when I go up to Sioux City on 75 instead of through KC.
I just love the smell of skyscrapers in the morning...

Ahhh yes, Lincoln. Saw the Lazlo's Brewery sign there. Have had MORE than a few ales there on the way back from Sturgis.  8)
We like to do the "town drive" and scope out the old houses when we're out for a weekend.

Nice shots there PS!

I was really impressed by the scale and perceived health of downtown Lincoln when I first saw it (not long ago).

Downtown Lincoln has always been healthy and vibrant. Having the campus adjacent to downtown has certainly helped.

I agree that I was totally shocked by the health of downtown.  Not very many empty buildings that I saw, and almost all buildings included some sort of street level retail.  I was very impressed and would like to go back for a weekend.  There were a few restaurants I wanted to try.
