"garfield" = a bad comic strip.  take garfield out of the strip and it becomes a hilarious and even profound Beckett-esque rumination on the meaninglessness of existence and modern life.

^ that's pretty great.  Although I would argue this is indeed part of the original humor (the bitterness, alienation, etc), because in the original comic, Garfield's "speech" bubbles are thought bubbles, Jon isn't actually hearing Garfield's responses, he's not "in" on the humor of the comic strip (that we the audience are).  He's a lonely guy talking to his animals.  Obviously, from the point of the average reader, Garfield is the star, with Jon just providing the fodder for his observations, but within the comic world, this is really Jon's perspective of the world.  This exercise strips away the fluff to get to something that's already in the original strip but that we normally completely overlook (the meaninglessness and alienation of Jon's life).  Great link!

Wow, you put a TON of analysis and thought into that!  Much more than I ever would have, but it made sense!

Which totally made the Garfield movie a farce. No way Jon ever gets to sniff a girl as fine as Jennifer Love Hewitt.
