Fitness Centers in the Northland

Since I'll be moving to the Northland in the coming weeks I was wondering what my options are for fitness centers. My wife and I visited the Liberty community center which is currently expanding and remodeling. I've also heard North Kansas City has a nice community center paid in part by Harrah's casino. Has anyone been to it and any other centers or clubs I should look into?

there are a couple of ymca's up there i think are pretty nice. YMCa on viveon and at i-29 and 64th or 72nd-can't remember. im not for sure but i think you can purchase some kind of membership to the maybee center at william jewell. my sis went to william jewell and she still goes to the maybee center to work out so either she paid for a membership or they still think she goes there but it seems like she told me she paid a membership. get on the ymca website and find the greater KC area and im sure you'll find several up there.

How far north are you talking about? If you work downtown, or use the Broadway Bridge, you may want to consider Rivermarket Fitness, at 3rd and delaware. Its open 24/7, locally owned, not very crowded, and very reasonable. The owners are really great, and its a very cool place to work out.

I've heard about some issues with the North KC center. They used to be really uptight about making sure it was a "family" oriented facility, to the point that you could not show your mid-drift without being asked to leave. There was an article in the Star a last year about a woman who was asked to change clothes. She was wearing fairly short top, and when she did some exercises, her belly was exposed. This is a 'no-no'. Hopefully, this policy may have been changed, but I'm not sure.

That's so ridiculous. Does the NKC center have a pool? If so, are you not allowed to show your midriff while in it?

Summit Fitness near I29 & 45 Highway.

Reasonably priced and kept up pretty well. Full service.

Regardless of the prudish controversy, the NKC center is a great facility, probably the best publicly-owned fitness center in the metro and it rivals many private centers.

I work out at the Liberty CC. You will NOT find a better deal! For somehting like $380 a year your entire family (wife, 50 kids, whatever) can utilize the gym, weight rooms, sauna/hot tub, indoor/outdoor pools, etc. For a single, it's even less.

I'm just amused that this thread and one about Krispy Kreme donuts can exist on the same forum.

Didn't Metro North Mall recently add a 24-Hour Fitness? My wife and I are members of the one near Borders on 119th & Metcalf. It's great because you can go anytime, night or day.

Good2Great,

What kind of timeframe before the expansion at Liberty C.C. is finished? I just wish the Northland would get a Prairie Life Fitness they are damn expensive though.

Prairie Life is awesome-top notch.

No 24 Hour Fitness yet -- I hear it's coming.

No there is no 24 Hour Fitness (yet) at Metro North. I keep asking 24 Hour when they are adding more clubs. They've been here what 1 year and a half and are up to 4. They just added in Shawnee, and I hear that KCK (guess where -- next to the K Speedway) is next.

I think near Zona Rosa or yes even Metro North would be a fine location.

I can't remember if I read it here or elsewhere, or if talked to someone that frequents this gym, but I know that the owner is a real believer in the urban core. He keeps the place open all night despite the fact that it is only just catching on. I've never been there but I'll probably make that my gym when I move downtown. I'll support anyone bringing options like that to downtown/rivermarket.
