Another tip: Don't ever use Norton ever again. Or McAffee. Or ZoneAlarm. They are big, heavy applications that take over your computer. If you need an antivirus solution, I highly *highly* recommend AVG Free. It's simply the best antivirus I've ever used. The upgrade to the commercial edition($70) is also highly recommended.
I bought this yesterday and installed it last night. It has already found a few .exe files and other stuff that came from some of the downloaded games my grandson did last June. Norton has been running nonstop and hasn't found them, nor did AdAware or SpySweeper or Spybot. Now if I can get it to recognize the spam, I'll be cooking. $87 for the commercial edition of AVG Internet Security. Lots of good press on this from some of my other internet friends.

Thanks

I now have 1 computer running Linux. It is so much like Windows I am thinking on putting it on all of my computers.

Well, except for the protected memory, real multiuser capability, real multithreading, the built-in development environment, the actually useful powerful command line, the speed despite hardware vendor ignorance, the actual security, the modularization of system and services, the boundless choices in graphical environments and interfaces, and any of the other ten zillion things that make GNU/Linux a better operating system, yes. It's just like Windows.

History's against them. A world with Vista as its principal operating system doesn't sound like the kind of place I want to be.

as bad as xp might seem, for me it's wayyyyy better than 98 or 2000. i don't see any reasom to upgrade to vista.

I agree, but MS is going to make sure that people who don't upgrade are left behind, technologically. For many people, that doesn't matter, but I'm a gamer. So it makes things difficult.

Your logic is faulty.  You say XP is better than it's predecessors.  So that implies Windows improves with every upgrade.  So wouldn't Vista be an improvement also?

I'm mean seriously.  I come across people all the time who are all "Ohhh, I don't need to upgrade."  I think they do it because it's fashionable to be "content."

There is no reason not to upgrade.

just what i need, the "sage of omaha" arguing with me.

you're a dumbass.

remember the old adage or is it some buddha thing, i don't recall, but, it goes like this. "it is better to keep your mouth shut and let others think you a fool, than to open your mouth and prove them right".

it does not imply that windows improves with every upgrade. what it says is that xp is working much better than it's previous versions for me and that i'm happy with it. what vista would be is money i don't need to spend if my current os is working just fine.

buy a house, get a family, make car payments. make multiple insurance payments. pay thousands of dollars for taxes every year and then come tell me i need to waste money on an upgrade i don't need.

you seem like a bright guy. the problem for me is that you have this real deep seated need to make sure everyone knows how bright you are. you might think you're wise now, but you don't really become a wise man until you can say to yourself "i really don't know it all".

look, i know the omaha board is a dead horse and i know you have this innate desire to troll this board and try to get a rise out of folks. that's fine. that is the nature of boards. if you would say, maybe, take your posts in a much friendlier direction, you would have half the board wanting to cruise up to omaha for a meetup.

and that's all i'm gonna say about that.

p.s you're wasting your time arguing logic with a german. you'll never win.

Yes, because Germans have no concept of logic. :)

My issue with Vista is not the expense because frankly, I don't plan on paying for it even if i do get it.

What burns me is the digital rights management that'll be built into it, along with the continuing convergence of services to get people to forget that there's anything else for accomplishing certain things, even if they're superior.

It'll be a blow to computing and freedom, and the world will drink it down as if they have to, without even knowing about it.

So.

Mac OS makes you stupid
Windows is opressive
Linux is ultimately user-unfriendly...

have we figured out whose computer penis is the biggest yet?

There's no such thing as a perfect operating system, but from what I've seen, OS10 comes pretty close.

The biggest weakness of OS X comes with mounting network volumes.  Slow networks or disconnecting without un-mounting can cause problems sometimes.
Maybe I'm not on a true 'network' but I've got my PowerMac & Emac connected via router & have no problems mounting the 3 different hard drives (two are in the powermac case), I've even opened & ran programs from one disc while running off another with no problems.  I think I recall one, maybe two instances where the Network didn't show up but all it took was a reboot on the system that wasn't showing.  Now I do have to admit that I've had no success with sharing via wifi with my girlfriend's compaq laptop (running XP).  After a few trouble shooting steps & no success I said screw it & used a flash drive.

About the only thing I envy XP for is games, fortunatley I'm not that intense of a gamer.  There are so many more productive uses for personal computers these days!  Not to mention that with intel macs this is now obsolete.

To my understanding it's just as easy to load Tiger onto certain intel processors as it is to load Windows onto a mac machine, so what exactly is the justification for getting mac hardware other than looks? yes, quality is pretty high too, but take that from a guy who spent 1600 on an  imac in 1999 (mac/extra ram/protection  plan/printer, yea 1600 is about right).  quality hardly means shit since then!  Might as well spent 600 on a duo dell & load leopard on it than 1000 on a mac if it's just going to be obsolete in five years.  I'll still  have my favorite OS & the expandability of a pc case without buying their Mac Pro.  Don't get me wrong, I plan on getting my first duo mac (mini) when Leopard comes out cos I'm a machead like that!  I'm just curious.

PS: I'll always have a place in my heart for the Power PC, RIP G4...

I don't think OS10 can be installed on non-Apple hardware. As I understand it, the software and hardware are DRM'd out the wazoo, so Apple's software will only run on their hardware.
