Since it's pretty simple, and can be done by just about anyone, it doesn't really command a very attractive salary. IT generally involves supporting big applications or servers, often in an enterprise environment. People doing things like programming, implementation, integration, system administration, and wide scale deployment usually fall under the IT pall.
Gotcha, it's not like my little business gets into any of that.  But still, I always hear people talking about issues that "someone" with a full time gig at their place of employment has to fix. Usually it is software related problems? I just figured that was an IT person. Still it seems there are plenty of new careers that have popped up that have to do with computer repair.

We always purchase the Apple Care 3 year plan for all of our computers and if we have issues that require hardware repairs or replacement, we call up our trusted mac guy down in the River Market and he comes over and takes care of us. I can pretty much fix the software issues we have.

And I think we should all pitch in and get Joe a graduation gift!  Kindergarten?  Way to go Joe!!

Because my new macbook has the intel processor, I can run windows XP on it simultaneously along with OSX. I bought the Parallels software when I bought the computer, and luckily managed to find my XP disk that came with my Dell desktop machine. It's called running a "virtual machine" or something like that.

It has saved me money because this way I don't have to pay $150 for the mac version of MSFT Office. Instead I just took my mom's old MSFT Office 2000 disk that she bought in 2001 and installed it on the XP side of this macbook. Other than that though I'm not sure if having both operating systems on the same computer is going to be all that important for me.

A while after Windows Vista comes out, I think I'll get it and install it on my Dell machine, merely out of curiosity to see how it works.

I think that it's awesome that he's able to get some use out of a seven or eight year old computer, and I *guarantee* that a new PC would be a big pain.

It would probably be much less of a pain.  His computer probably has a crank on the side for electricity.

I still have a vic 20, c-64, c-128, 4plus, amiga 1000, amiga 500.

Only stupid people need the newest computer. And thats because the probrammers are stupid, lazy people, unwilling to write compact code.. but what do you expect when using Micro soft access?. These old computers ran on 7 to 14 megeherts processors and still crunched video. Matter of fact Commodore was one of the first to have composit video output from the motherboard. So YOU keep getting the newest computer.. I'll get every ounce out of my old puters!

6510 machine code is awsome to program in!!

just to make a point...its all about how much you know and how you percieve everything.  I personally know alot about alot, because I see no value in paying someone to fix something when I realize that they are exactly the same as me...they are human..nothing more...nothing less.  I have a large background in cars and computers, and I have done all my own work without any major problems...and I self educated myself with everything.  I have gone all the way from changing oil to replacing my bent and broken axles on my car with a bummed (broken, dislocated, and seperated) shoulder and nothing but a steel rod and a size 12 metric socket...to booting a computer, building computers, and diagnosing my computers 7 HD scsi array over the last year with nothing but my bare hands and yes..a magnetic...drill and screw bits.

Basically what I'm saying is anyone can do anything with hardly any specialized knowledge or tools...its all about your own will and how you percieve tasks to be done.

It isn't just about the tools a particular task requires.  One may be able to build a computer from scratch with nothing more than a screwdriver, but that doesn't mean it is easier than replacing the brakes on a car that might require multiple different tools.

It all depends on how one values their time.  If you'd rather take the time to become knowledgeable enough to "do it yourself," that is great.  You can save money and have learned something in the process.  At the same time, many people would rather devote their time to other activities: family, friends, travel, play, etc. than learn the inner working of a computer, operating system, or automobile.  That is fine too.

You cannot get much use out of a computer that old, plain and simple.  Try to load a program like Google Earth, or an internet based one like MSFT's new Live 3D, you won't be able to.  You are literally missing out on 90% of the internet.

What's it like to load a webpage full of Flash ads?  I have an old 1.5Ghz AMD and loading any site with flash on that thing is like pulling teeth.

What resolution do you use?  Probably no more than 800x600, if that.  You could even be using 640x480.  Every website you load must have an annoying bottom scrollbar.

You make fun of me because I have a new computer, well I feel like I'm at a stoplight being made fun of for having a newer car by a guy with a rusted out Yugo.  "Enjoy your NEW car, with your air conditioning, tires with traction, and uncracked windsheild!"

Today people can buy a brand new computer with monitor for $300, anyone with an outdated computer just doesn't belong on the internet.

And I will enjoy my new computer in Feb.  I'm building one for Windows Vista Ultimate.  24 inch monitor, Intel Quad core proc, atleast a TB of HD space, 4GB of RAM, DX10 video card, I will enjoy it indeed.  My 3.6Ghz Intel is way too slow.

Just a heads up, Joemoney. I'm pretty sure that no one on the forum is jealous of you in any way shape or form.  Anyone from Omaha who spends as much time as you do trolling a Kansas City development forum baiting people  is no one to be jealous of. Pity maybe. Jealousy, not so much.

i think a 3.6Ghz can easily handle the load caused by the user posting garbage on an internet forum about a distant city.

Till I have a 1 terrabyte drive in my home and one with the same data in some other part of KC.  I will remain a bit "freaked out" as I continue to juggle drives and data to keep things backed up.

Good to know you consider some of the most talented and successful creative minds on the planet as computer illiterate. I would love to see how long it takes you to master programs like Adobe After Effects, Apple Final Cut Pro, Digidesign Pro Tools or any one of the Avid packages. Some of the professionals that work with these programs have hardware configurations that make your little "dream machine" look pretty pedestrian Joe. The Mac has a strong presence in just about every high end post production house in this country. Oh, and they make a ton of money too. And that's not to mention all the other artists, writers, filmmakers and photographers who run their entire businesses with Macs. So save your lame attempt at trash talk, you obviously don't know what you're talking about...

Not to mention that the number 3 or 4 supercomputer in the world is a cluster of macs. Not exactly a kiddie computer.
