When exactly is the expanded National World War I Museum scheduled to open? I heard there is supposed a huge event on the date it opens, with the President coming to town and all.

I also read somewhere, that in the future, renovations and such are to take place at Penn Valley, something about rerouting roads out of the park to having them circumvent it.

actually, I was there last Saturday with friends and it said Dec 3 on their sign.

The place is looking fanstastic too... love the glass floor over the poppy garden.

Yeah, this is going to be a huge asset to KC once it is open. It's not only a timeless structure, it has a timeless story to tell. The Great War is the modern root of the conflicts that we are now having in the Middle East, it spawned the Muslim fundamentalist movement against the west, and it teaches us the stupidity of grudge match wars. Maybe Bush will take a tour.

Instead of just flying through town like he did last week - just for a fund raiser.
I would think that he would come to dedicate the memorial at least.  IT is the ONLY WWI Memorial on it's scale in the USA, and that is why it is getting the National name.
I bet he will dedicate it.

Seemed like a good place to put this.
Liberty Memorial hill erosion repair project will constrict Main Street for months

Cool, wondered how that was going to work.

Are they really widening the road, as in for cars? Be nice to have more sidewalk space.

Maybe If the road can be moved over there is space for streetcar only lanes in the middle?

Seems like enough space. Maybe that's part of what spurred this project?

Cannot believe they would demolish the present very nice and very sturdy retaining wall along Main. Perhaps the road they are referring to is the road that goes around the east end of the Memorial through the park.

Are we talking about the same wall? The current one is only a few feet tall and the dirt looks like it's almost going to spill over in parts.

There are several places where the earth is sliding down the bank.

They probably will build a wall similar to this, but slanted.

I walk this section of Main quite often and it’s terrible, regularly have to walk in the street with my back to traffic. It’s pretty sad considering there’s a sidewalk only on the one side and this is the main pedestrian connection to midtown.

I hope they widen the sidewalk and don’t make the retaining wall ugly, but it’s kc so I’m sure it will be ugly as sin and the sidewalk will be full of obstructions.

From the article:
The wall will range from 5 to 21 feet in height "and will have a natural contoured finish and color to complement the existing stone outcroppings along Main Street," according to the National world War I Museum and Memorial.
It also says the project will start within a month, so I think we're looking at the final plan.

That’s what I get for commenting without reading the article. Thanks!

So stripping all of the vegetation off the hillside was a bad idea. Weird.
