Re: P+L Tenant Rumors
Houston's is certainly expensive enough to fit in the PandL.
Johnny's is local. Is local considered "contrived"?

I keep forgetting about Johnnys. I DO love them, have since my KU days!
I'll give it a shot, for sure. I hope they open soon. The date keeps getting pushed back...

The date does? What was it originally?
Funny how the generic sports bar concept is ok and not contrived to ku fans

oh i recognize that it's nothing "special" by any means. It's nostalgia, pure and simple. It'll actually be the first Johnny's I've gone too since i left Lawrence, so it might not do it for me. But i'm excited to at least go in and order a beer.

Re: P+L Tenant Rumors
The stip mall locations are all pretty generic sports bars and have none of the charm/authenticity of the original gritty roadhouse. Will be interesting to see what they do with this sort of space - probably just 'upscale, contemporary sports bar'.ColumbusParkian wrote: oh i recognize that it's nothing "special" by any means. I walk by every so often. They've had piles of insulation lying around inside that place for a while.ColumbusParkian wrote: I keep forgetting about Johnnys. I DO love them, have since my KU days!

I would hope the P+L Johnny's would be a couple notches above their locations in the JO in terms of design.KCPowercat wrote: The date does? What was it originally?

The original Johnny's Tavern is not a generic sports bar and has a North Lawrence nightlife scene that is pretty unique.
Such as? An ESPN Zone to fully realize that corner as d-bag central?KCPowercat wrote: So this has went from rumors to wishes? I have never been to houston's but I don't think they command one of the last great p&l locations. Need something more unique.
P+L needs to offer some places with a broader appeal as the reputation for that area is getting sleazier by the minute in the evenings. It's just a replacement location for Westport as the best place to catch an STD. More Bristol...Less Tengo.
Cordish should've gave away the farm to get Celina Tio's Julia(n) down there.

How to you translate more unique to espnzone. No...unique. Houstons is not unique or even a desired name.

ESPN Zone is what was always rumored at the corner of 14th/Grand.KCPowercat wrote: How to you translate more unique to espnzone. No...unique. Houstons is not unique or even a desired name.
P+L has a lot of unique stuff and very few familiar names. I never said anything about Houston's being unique...I'm more concerned with what will work rather than something that gives you a boner.

Re: P+L Tenant Rumors
And why do you think houstons would given their recent dive in the market and they don't offer anything of substance downtown...especially after hereford house reopens???

hereford house and houston's are competing? i don't really see that as the same type of customer. houston's is much gayer than hereford house.KCPowercat wrote: And why do you think houstons would given their recent dive in the market and they don't offer anything of substance downtown...especially after hereford house reopens???

Agreed that these two don't compete. Wish Strouds would've opened in PandL as opposed to SMP. Would that be competition to Peachtree?trailerkid wrote: hereford house and houston's are competing? i don't really see that as the same type of customer. houston's is much gayer than hereford house.

I have never been to houstons but I thought their thing was steaks at a cheaper price than say plaza 3?
Never the less, I don't see them as a quality downtown tenant, especially given their faceplant in the market.

The food quality and service is very good though. They do what they do well, their menu is very limited but tastey. They aren't really a "steakhouse" but more of just upscale american dining. Besides, you get sides with your entree at Houstons - something you don't at very upscale true to form steakhouses. I think they prefer to quietly blend in the background as a good quality restaurant than be front stage as an attraction in a development anyway. At least, that's the impression I get from the Plaza location.KCPowercat wrote: I have never been to houstons but I thought their thing was steaks at a cheaper price than say plaza 3?

Hereford House was kinda gay back when DB was in its prime.trailerkid wrote: hereford house and houston's are competing? i don't really see that as the same type of customer. houston's is much gayer than hereford house.

it was a sort of peaceful co-existence. i remember so many times parking in that lot and walking past HH patrons who didn't really seem to care what was going on next door (and you know they knew...).mudjack wrote: Hereford House was kinda gay back when DB was in its prime.
