Looks like Travel & Leisure is starting the 2013 survey. Is claimed to be the largest city survey (in participation).

Chicago, Minneapolis and KC are the only midwest cities they are polling. I wonder why they dropped STL a couple years ago.

I think consistently bad reviews gets you bounced from the list.

Perhaps they wanted to cover as wide of an swath of the midwest as possible, there could be too much interplay between Chicago and the cities within a 5 hour radius? Dunno. Minneapolis and KC are beyond weekend trips to Chicago.

Don't understand why St Louis would be dropped. There is probably more touristy stuff in St Louis then KC mainly because they have the Arch, Budweiser, City Museum, etc. Also, why is Santa Fe, Savannah, and Charleston on this list, they are basically just tourist cities not really cities.

I think its just a midwest bias with Travel and Lesuire and they want to cater to the Coasts. Santa Fe is pretty popular with the Hollywood crowd, think a couple celeb's have home there

Could be, STL did very very poorly in the 2009 and hasn't been surveyed since.

http://www.travelandleisure.com/america ... s/st-louis

Edit: Cleveland was also dropped. Even Cleveland came out ahead of STL in 2009, ouch...
http://www.travelandleisure.com/america ... s/st-louis

As mentioned before, KC came out ahead of Denver (with outsider perception) last year...
http://www.travelandleisure.com/america ... /vs/denver

T&L claimed to have over 40K respondents last year, that's far more than the Feds use to determine unemployment rate.

High Tech Challengers to Silicon Valley

http://www.theatlanticcities.com/jobs-a ... lley/6011/
San Jose (the Silicon Valley) tops the list with 22.6 venture capital deals per capita. But San Francisco is close behind with 17.2 deals per 100,000 people. The list changes substantially from there with smaller metros, especially those with major colleges and universities, moving up considerably. Boulder, Colorado (home to the University of Colorado) is third with 13.6 deals per 100,000 people, Boston is fourth with 9 and Ann Arbor, home to the University of Michigan, in fifth (6.4). Lawrence, Kansas (University of Kansas, (5.4 deals), Austin, University of Texas (5.1) Charlottesville, Virginia, University of Virginia), Missoula, Montana (4.6), Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, University of Illinois 3.4) and San Diego, University of California at San Diego (3.3) round out the top 10.

The criteria for this are all actually things i'd consider to be a compliment or sign of a progressive city...
To determine which city has the biggest nose in the air, we factored in some traditional staples of snobbery: a reputation for aloof and smarty-pants residents, along with high-end shopping and highbrow cultural offerings like classical music and theater.

But we also considered 21st-century definitions of elitism: tech-savviness, artisanal coffeehouses, and a conspicuous eco-consciousness (say, the kind of city where you get a dirty look for throwing your coffee cup in the wrong bin).

I think it was within the past 5 years. A lot of the hotel chains acquire boutique/historic hotels for their luxury portfolio. Marriott recently acquired the Peabody Hotel in Little Rock, that is the famous hotel with the marching ducks.

I get that list confused with the one listing places no one wants to be.
