For those two reasons alone, I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if a casino never happens in KCK till Kansas reworks the gambling laws.  They plan to take so much in taxes, it will be difficult for a casino to make it now.  This is a different economy than it was five years ago.  Casinos are not the cash cows they used to be and with the extremely high taxes that a Kansas casino will have to pay, there will be little if any profit.

I was for this project, now, I’m having second thoughts.  A KCK casino would all be shut down at least one Missouri casino taking 30-40% of the market from the MO casinos.  Not good IMO.

I wish they were building this in downtown KCK and I wish KCMO could get a nice casino closer to its downtown like what St Louis now has.

Instead, I think we are getting another casino in the middle of nowhere (if it gets built) and one or two MO side casinos will probably close (probably Argosy and Isle).

My guess is that Slitterbaum is next on the chopping block.

Entertainment properties has already said the project is "disabled."

That's what I thought, but they recently held a media day showcasing construction after that statement was issued.

Maybe the retail/entertainment area will be put on hold and just the first phase of the actual park will open.

yeah, because nothing ever gets halted during construction, or even scrapped.

drive down 210, and go see the sad sad remnants of sams town casino. they poured over a hundred million into that place, and closed it after 2 years when harrah's bought em.

so, save it. having it started means nothing.

This is one project that I really hope happens.

But it's not a done deal till it opens even though dirt has been moved some construction has taken place.  We are talking about a 700 million dollar project in today's economy...

It should be a good project for metro KC.

I still have my doubts on the long term stability of Village West though.  There is jut not enough people living or working out there to sustain in.  That's my opinion anyway.

Cerner bought it about 7 years ago. They have been using it as a convention center since then. It's very nice.

Ah I see. I haven't been out that way in quite a while, wasn't sure what was going on with the remaining structures. Good to see it's being used.

And yet, the Royals raise prices 9% across the board.    I guess great products will sell no matter what the economy does eh?

I did always wonder why anyone would believe that a 2nd NeckCar race would happen here.  Seemed to be another empty "Super Bowl/Final Four" promise like we saw out at TSC.    We don't need any more casinos anyway in this metro.

seriously, i wondered when someone would point this out. any new casino knocks an old one out, simple as that. if not two old ones.

By the looks of the Cordish insider's post up above, it looks like they are going to reapply with phased construction and in return put the promise of the additional races in writing.

If anyone thinks the gaming industry is remotely healthly, take a quick gander at the MGM stock price:

The Gaming industry is in serious hurt. There have been layoffs left and right and a few casinos around the country have been shut down.

Hard Rock could still roll as Kansas casino name

The expected new bid by Kansas Speedway and the Cordish Co. for a Kansas casino will again carry the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino name.

Until a few days ago that actually appeared a bit dicey....

As late as Thursday afternoon Phil Shalala, marketing vice president for Morgans’ Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, would only say, “We remain in negotiations with Kansas Entertainment.”

By midday Friday, however, Shalala reported the two sides had a done deal....

The vetting and selection process in Kansas and Maryland will consume most if not all of 2009. Expect officials in both states to peer closely at Cordish’s resources and ability to simultaneously pull off two megacasino projects in a troubled economy.

Meanwhile, Boerger said details of the partners’ 2009 Kansas casino bid could be firmed up in a matter of days.

He said the partners expect to propose a project phased over several years, starting with a $400 million casino structure that would include a couple of restaurants and lounges.

A hotel and convention center and more dining and entertainment venues would come later — how much later is not clear — bringing expected capital investment to the same $705 million proposed in the first round.

Kansas receives three proposals for Wyandotte County casino

The lottery now has until June 30 to negotiate contracts with the following companies:

• Penn Hollywood Kansas Inc. The company, a subsidiary of Penn National Gaming Inc. of Wyomissing, Pa., announced Wednesday morning that it submitted an application for a $500 million development. The Hollywood-themed project would be next to the Schlitterbahn water park resort site in western Kansas City, Kan.

• Golden Heartland. A subsidiary of Golden Gaming of Las Vegas, the company came close to securing the state’s approval last year. About 30 minutes before the 5 p.m. deadline, it submitted a $652 million proposal for a casino at 110th Street and Interstate 70 in Edwardsville.

• Kansas Entertainment LLC. The partnership between Kansas Speedway and the Baltimore-based Cordish Co. announced plans Monday to build a $700 million Hard Rock Hotel & Casino overlooking Turn 2 at the speedway.
