Right. Its 39 gates, but the layout/internal operations are being built to handle 42 gates without needing any changes (other than the additional gates and jetways themselves). While they are being thoughtful in the design of current layout to expand beyond 42, anything beyond would likely require major additions/changes to the internal operations (think baggage handling). According to their projections, 42 gates should be sufficient for the long-term.

KCI developer announces local subcontractors for demo
The team behind the $1.5 billion single-terminal project has selected subcontractors for the early work on the project. Nine of the 10 are local minority- or women-owned businesses and 55 percent of the contract dollars on this portion of work will go to those nine businesses.

Indianapolis-based Renascent Inc. will oversee the demolition, which much be completed ahead of construction of the new terminal.
After the groundbreaking, the project will start with the interior demolition of Terminal A in April, according to the release. Once that is complete, the demolition of the terminal's superstructure and parking garage will follow.

All 4 airport related ordinances passed legislative committee today. That includes the 1st tranche of bonds formerly known as "short term financing."

KC Library site has great retrospective of both DT and KCI airports. KCI terminals looked so open and airy with only an open rail(a person could almost walk under) dividing holding areas from concourse.

It's amazing how quickly opinion can move from old to new. It's tempting to dunk on people, but just a reminder that a well run campaign can change minds.
I will throw some criticism behind our elected officials because I think they've mostly handled this like shit.
But it's a good step for the city and we should all be happy today.
