That list doesn't make much sense in term of size categories. They list size by city cores but then mention companies in metro. They should categorize by metro size if listing metro companies.

Saw this listing that shows ranking of earnings/economic impact from Information industry (telcom, publishing, data processing).

KC ranked 14th in 2011 for Information...

Would seem to me that larger companies are growing and pulling more from each other than startups are, but could be the most talented are leaving for startups. Is a good problem for KC to have. Cerner has been mostly pulling in college grads and others from outside KC. That has to help the pool, especially when some later realize Cerner's reputation for expecting long hours (depending on dept) and leave for all the other growing tech jobs in KC.

Well, Missoula is itty-bitty with a university that attracts folks that like to ski. Sounds like a match made in high-tech or biotech heaven. It wouldn't take very many deals to push its per capita number up.

So many small deals per capita. I wonder if there is some sort of microfinance (medio-finance) group working out of Missoula.

KC region used to get very little VC until recently. Is possible to probable that Google presence has indirectly given KC area more attention but it could also be KU on its own. Is just per capita so not particularly large yet, but now that KC region has grabbed attention from outsiders, could grow quite a bit more.

Move over, New York, California; Missouri's tech jobs are a rising star

Missouri beat out California and New York for growth in technology jobs in the first half of the year, according to a study released this week citing U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

The Show-Me-State ranked third on Dice.com's top 10 list of state technology job growth, showing a 3.8 percent increase in technology jobs from Jan. 13 to June 13, compared with the same period in 2012. That translates to 1,200 new technology jobs in Missouri during the period, a Dice spokesman said.

And Dice shows only a portion of KC tech jobs. They show only a few postings of the hundreds of Cerner IT/tech related jobs. Simplyhired.com is much better for IT jobs.

I didn't realize BATS in Lenexa is the 3rd largest stock exchange behind NYSE and NASDAQ. They are buying another Jersey based exchange so will boost its volume. Close enough to a tech/data driven company.

They will become 2nd largest exchange behind NYSE after the merger and will still be based in Lenexa.

A good problem to have. Cerner and others continue to bring in tech people from outside KC by the thousands.

Local employers were looking to fill 8,145 job openings in the computer and math fields last spring, according to a 2012 report by the Regional Workforce Intelligence Network of Kansas City. The grant-funded network said its calculations showed 2,730 new job postings in the fields in August 2012 and a pool of 679 unemployed computer and math workers to pull from.

Kansas City technology employers such as Perceptive Software LLC, NetStandard Inc. and Saepio Technologies Inc. have cited the limited field of qualified local tech employees when making changes to recruitment and retention efforts. Perceptive started recruiting more heavily outside Kansas City as a result. NetStandard and Saepio also have rolled out new incentives, such as rewards for helping co-workers with car trouble and unlimited vacation, in the past year to hold onto software developers.

I've heard that Perceptive likes to go after Cerner employees, but many who work at the NKC campus are reluctant to take a job at Perceptive's office in the hinterlands. Cerner could be hurting themselves here by locating more employees farther out, lessening the incentives for them to stay with Cerner.

A bluetooth device startup based in the KC Startup Village collected nearly $1M in investments. They'll likely soon grow out of the village. Where will they go?
