It is difficult to put a number on, but the NBA is also trying to have the new owner buy this headline out of the public sphere. The purchaser of the Clippers will have to pay a premium to avoid being dragged through litigation and being a part of an uncertain billion dollar purchase.KCMax wrote:Gee, Forbes was only $1.4 billion off in their estimates. It's not Yost's fault -- rebuilding a baseball team is a 15-20 year process.

What litigation would involve the team? Especially after the sale. What would be uncertain about it when Sterling signs off on it.
About the sales price there were two other bids in excess of $1B. I think $1.4B and $1.6B.

I don't completely understand the ownership partnership with the NBA, but I would imagine Sterling could sue based on the fact his property was forcibly sold from his control. If he were to win such a case (and I think he would have a compelling argument), that $2 billion purchase could be yanked out from under Balmer. I've heard mentioned elsewhere that the $2 billion figure is as much to prevent Sterling from trying to drag the team into uncertainty and the league into a prolonged lawsuit.

Is Sterling a 100% owner or does he have some partners? If he has partners then they could force the sale. Believe he would have a fiduciary responsibility to accept a sale like this.

It is a forced sale of an asset in a family trust controlled by his estranged wife in the midst of a divorce and initiated by league actions without a ton of precedent or foundation. Did I mention that they are now questioning his mental capacity from a legal perspective?aknowledgeableperson wrote:Is Sterling a 100% owner or does he have some partners? What could possibly go wrong under those simple conditions? &&&

Yes, it is a very complicated matter. But even Sterling's own lawyer has admitted tests have shown that Sterling does have some mental impairment. Appears his wife does have control of the trust "now" and has the authority to sell the team.
Funny thing. An agreement between the trust and the NBA states the trust will indemnify the league for any losses resulting from the sale of the team. So, in effect, that means if Donald Sterling wins his lawsuit against the NBA the family trust will pay for the damages. He will end up paying himself.

But the litigation will be over rather fast. On the surface it appears the sale was legit, afterall the wife was in charge of the trust at the time. What may take a little more time is the damages(?) claim Sterling may have with the NBA. Don't know the wording of the franchise agreement Sterling signed when he bought the team but I would be surprised it is didn't have some wording concerning conduct detrimental to the league. If the players won't play for him and players won't play against any team he may field he has hurt the league. Sterling is claiming the recording was illegal but wouldn't that have more of a standing in a criminal case instead of a civil case?

Appears Sterling has agreed to the sale and has dropped all litigation. Guess $2B was too much to pass up.Thus, the litigation.

Should the Sprint Center just cancel that Heat PreSeason game? I am pretty sure that a WNBA game could outdraw this Heat Preseason game.

I'm guessing you're joking, but Chris Bosh, D-Wade and Steph Curry are still big draws. Curry is one of the most exciting guys to watch in the league.brewcrew1000 wrote:Should the Sprint Center just cancel that Heat PreSeason game? Reports are the NHL will add four clubs, none of them in KC.
Seattle, Las Vegas, Toronto, and Quebec City.
LOL, at least we have the Miami Heat with their one game a year here.
