I attended a luncheon yesterday where the facility was described. The speaker said the space was designed as if it were an instrument. You will feel like you are sitting inside a violin or cello. He also said if you whisper something in the back row, it can be heard everywhere. So be careful what you say!

He said installation of the 5,548-pipe Casavant organ was completed within the last few days. It will take months to be fully tuned, starting in October and ending in January. The tuners will do their work at night, when no performances are going on.

The Kauffman Center is one of only two that is completely privately funded. For a rather substantial donation, you can have a seat named after you. Just call.

BIG BIG BIG effort going on for Sunday, Sept. 18 (Community Day, 11a-5p). P+L and Crossroads are rolling out the red carpet. 20K people expected. Restaurants and galleries open. Bands and performers stuffed in every nook and cranny. Free shuttles roaming all around.

PAC in current edition of Time along with photo of the more popular north facades, comparing it to a concertina or Elizabethan costume.

I had a chance to tour the inside last week, and I would say I am most impressed. Both halls are very unique and very beautifully arranged. The views over the Crossroads to the South are quite wonderful, and the interior lobby design is quite breathtaking. It fits in well with some of the newer glass additions to downtown we have (Star, H&R, Sprint Center). I feel it is another edition to the arts community that we can be very proud of, and yet another gift to the city as with the Bloch building of the Nelson-Atkins.

Star had a whole section devoted to the PAC this weekend. Lots of good stuff. Also stressed 15,000 parking spots near the PAC as well as local businesses and restaurants.

From what I've seen, and I should have taken a pic, the south side isn't near as bad as I feared.

Here is a link to the Kauffman site promoting the Open House on Sunday:

http://www.kauffmancenter.org/2011/09/0 ... pen-house/

it should be a huge day, with free shuttle service circling through the Crossroads. We're hoping for a "First Friday" like crowd.

Many of the restaurants and shops that are usually closed on Sundays will be open. The Rieger will be serving brunch, and Michael Smith and Extra Virgin will be open for dinner. There's plenty more, just wanted to get the ball rolling and the word out there!

Kauffman Center lures Starlight Theatre to perform indoors
Kansas City Starlight Theatre is synonymous with its outdoor performance venue, but in August, it’s taking one show inside.
From Aug. 3-12, Starlight will present “Aida” under the roof of the $413 million Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts , which opens this weekend.
