or a near .500 team
How do you figure? If you put every OT point ub he loss column loss, Edmonton is 40-41. Any other team is at least 5 games over .500.

As opposed to the NBA where three teams that are 3 games under .500 are going to make the playoffs.
number of outdated arenas teams are currently playing in like Pittsburgh Civic Arena.
A number? Name one more. Nassau County and the Meadowlands are being replaced.

But OT losses still count as a point, which still boosts you up the standings

You missed my point. If you combine the 'L' column and the 'OT' column, only one team is under .500 in the NHL.

If you lose a game in OT or in regulation it's still a loss.  But I still like the fact that you get a point in an OT loss.

Newark Arena is under construction.

Nassau County Coliseum WILL be replaced. They are close the a lease agreement and have approval from nearly all important parties, including the Unions...very important in Nassau County.

THE NHL
Robitaille’s job: Find KC a team
AEG chooses former star to oversee development of the Sprint Center.
By RANDY COVITZ
The Kansas City Star

Tim Leiweke, chief executive officer of Anschutz Entertainment Group, has appointed former NHL star Luc Robitaille as point man in the search for a team for the Sprint Center.

AEG, which will manage the Sprint Center when it opens in October 2007, owns the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings.

Robitaille, the highest-scoring left winger in NHL history, will be assistant to the governor and alternate governor for the Kings, and his responsibilities will include development of both the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif., and the Sprint Center.

I'm okay with the AHL. Just don't bring that godawful UHL crap here again.

I'd be happy with AHL, too. It's quality play, and the tickets are reasonable. Plus the league's cost structure is such that an owner is less likely to try to extort the city every decade or so.

Is it possible that the Omaha franchise could move here?

Last year they were last in attendance.

This year so far, they are last in avg. attendance with 2,482 after 5 home games.

AHL would be ok...

...if there was a "major league" tenant in there too.

while i am in the camp arguing "it doesn't really matter whether we have an anchor tenant b/c KC needed a new arena for events," i have to admit that it would be rather sour for some that, after the herculean effort to push, plan, and build the arena, AEG can't come up with something better than an omaha hockey team.  :?

My only concern about AHL vs. NHL is that suite owners might be less interested in renewing. Most (all?) of them are companies, and a major reason why companies lease suites is for entertaining customers and business partners. Taking them to an AHL game doesn't have the same cachet as an NHL or NBA game. If that's the case, then there could be revenue issues in future years.

Minor league hockey is no good. The hockey isn't fast enough or as much fun to watch.

The AHL may not be quite as skilled but it is still very exciting and there are some very talented players in the AHL, and most are under two-way contracts with the Show. I have met more than a few people who are die hard AHL fans, they refuse to watch anything else other than the AHL...even the NHL. That doesn't really make much sense to me, but the AHL is less than a step down from the NHL in my opinion. I will be more than happy with an AHL team and the rest of Kansas City, who might not think it at first, will come to love the AHL too once they see the quality of games. The UHL was about 3 steps down from the AHL, meaning missed passes, sloppy power plays, missed checks, and poor goalies. Kansas City isnt meant for anything lower than the AHL. All of you who ever went to watch the Blades in their hay-day will agree with me. NHL is the most desireable for multiple reasons, but the AHL will be just fine. As for suite sales... I can see your point on that, but the majority would still be sold out for companies if we got the AHL.

I was talking to a coworker about the possibility of AHL locking in the Sprint Center. And he said "what the hell is the AHL, sounds like NHL rejects to me." Hopefully it could be popular enough to get the local support. Some people are oblivious to certain sports.
