I don't think that's a reason to not include them in new development.  I think they're just too cheap.  I agree that they are not the best looking structures in the winter unless you keep them running year 'round like the Northland Fountain.  If you have never seen it, it's worth a diversion from your normal route.  (North Oak and Vivion off of I-29)

year round seems to becoming pretty standard for new installations these days - all of the fountains at crown center are now year round.  I would think Highwoods would consider adapting some of the bigger plaza fountains eventually.

Is Cordish still planning on building the centerpiece fountain/winter fire pit?

The heated water fountains at crown center and the Pomona fountain at Wornall & Ward Parkway are very expensive as they use an enormous amount of energy in winter.  Unheated such as the Anita Gorman Northland are cheaper, but must be more basic and sturdier.  A complex kinetic fountain such as the Bloch would probably be impossible to be winter flowing in this climate  The  small Cordish fire/water feature is still planned for just south of the H & R Block building.

They have tore the hell out of the south side of Truman to make way for the new curbs and sidewalks - looks like they will actually be narrowing it down a lane in several spots, in favor of a wider grass median/sidewalk along 670.  It looks like the only three lane sections will be where they have left turn lanes to head north.

Holy Crap! Are those real bricks? If they are, I'm impressed. If they're only concrete pavers i'm not as impressed, but relieved and happy that its not like the poured, tinted crosswalks on main in midtown.

Either way, it looks great in comparison to before.

They should have used fencing like this (but bigger) along the bridges over 670 instead of those cheap chain link fences.

Thanks for all the recent pics Dave

burton...that fence is temporary.  Artsy type railings are still to come.

I really like the black railing...it made an immediate improvement...Truman road on the south side needed this about as bad as any street downtown.  Glad they got this done now.

Those are real bricks set in sand.  The new rails along the ditch add an old world permanence and will look great with the new lighting and landscaping.  We could not get it covered at this point but we are prettying it up.

I am impressed. This area needed a major facelift for some time now.

FINALLY...  At least if there is going to be the trench for some time, at least it is now looking modern and respectable.

Sadder is all the "temporary" parking lots that end up sticking around for 40 years.

Just ideas for bridging the gap over Truman Boulevard.

Further east of Truman, there could be a retail strip.

That would truly look nice. The problem though is ventilation.

The interstate tunnel under six city blocks in Phoenix is ventilated with a system of air blowers and ventilation shafts.  The same could be done on Truman.    New York City has ventilation shafts for the subways, commuter train, the Lincoln, Holland, and Midtown tunnels as well.  Plus the movement of the cars sucks the air through the tunnel anyway.

A possible design for a parking garage atop the freeway passage.  It's an old Henry Sauvage design of a building fashioned as a homage to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and the Eqytian pyramids.  This would also had been cool as a possible design of our Sprint Arena.  Image the terraces landscaped with potted trees and plants. It would have been one of the most unique and beautiful arenas in the world.

The top floor could have had a mezzanine/lounge area, and a mini-botanical garden that looked similar to this.
