Are they tearing down the hotel in this redevelopment, or is that it in the upper right corner of the image (the white building)?

I wish people would stop using the word "iconic" for everything. I doubt anything they build in KCK is ever going to merit the use of that word.
The developer now will drop the athletic field and the fitness center components. Lanier plans to increase the total number of apartments from a planned range of 75-85 units to 85-100 units. The apartments will include studio, one- and two-bedroom units ranging from 550 to 1,050 square feet.

Five apartments will be designated as workforce housing, earmarked for tenants earning less than 70% of the Kansas City, Kansas, median household income. All remaining units will be market rate.

Lanier now plans to build a 7,500-square-foot meeting space and construct 7,000 square feet of retail space on the lower level of the apartment building.

The Lanier project will be coming back through to amend it's Final Development Plan. Expected to be heard in January at Planning Commission.

Additionally, the City Hall Place development at 6th & Ann has submitted for it's FDP, expected to be heard in December at Planning Commission.

Also, this Saturday, the Kansas State Historic Society will be voting on whether to officially designate Downtown KCK as a historic district.

Other projects in the pipeline include completion of the YMCA building and completion of construction of apartments at 8th & Washington.

Hoping we can get one of these projects to the finish line and maybe drag thew rest with it.

Downtown KCK will see $29M in projects deliver 80-plus affordable apartments
Riverstone Platform Partners is spearheading a pair of development projects valued at $29 million that aim to bring more affordable housing to downtown Kansas City, Kansas, with openings targeted by the end of the year.
Boulevard Lofts

The developer partnered with Community Housing of Wyandotte County (CHWC) to create Boulevard Lofts at the corner of Eighth Street and Washington Boulevard.
...
Now after years of work, including razing the existing buildings, the team is close to crossing the finish line on the $15 million project, with plans to complete Boulevard Lofts by the end of the year.

The complex will offer one-, two- and three-bedroom units ranging from 704 to 1,410 square feet. Forty of the 50 units will be reserved for tenants earning 60% or less than the area's median income; the remaining 10 will be leased at market rate.
...
Y Lofts

Less than a half-mile from Boulevard Lofts, Hrabe leads another team hoping to bring new life to a piece of local history.

Riverstone Platform Partners is working to convert the former YMCA building at the corner of Eighth Street and Armstrong Avenue into affordable apartments.
...
The building since has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places and has undergone a series of renovations to bring some of its historic elements back to a usable state. The $14 million project, called Y Lofts, will offer 45 one- and two-bedroom units for adults over 55 earning between 30% to 80% of the area's median income.

Love to see it. Got to get these done.

Next year, hoping to see the Reardon Center project and City Hall Place get approved and get going later in the year.

The Y Lofts Project has died at the moment. The remodel took too long and they lost their major funding source it seems. Such a kick in the ribs.

Mayor(?) Garner is OOO for an "undisclosed time" with Mayor Pro Tem Tom Burroughs stepping in to perform most of the duties
“We haven’t had that discussion, it’s open ended, he could be back in two weeks, he could be back in a month, I have no idea,” Burroughs said.

Burroughs, a state representative for 26 years and now a county commissioner for seven years, says he’s considering running for mayor next year.

Worth noting Burroughs, as well as members of Mayor Garner's staff are still attempting to run interference on LITHC projects in KCK. Mostly because they do not understand it in any way possible.

Brotherhood building declared unfit for habitation. This was the largest office building to go up in either Kansas Cities in the immediate postwar years and had an elite social and business membership club on the top floor(Terrace Club). It was largest office building in KCK until the Cerner buildings at village west.

Seems like a plan to redevelop it is in the works. Let the building go to shit, kick tenants out, then redevelop. It’s a shitty move but likely

The article I just finished reading definitely implied that the current owners have defaulted on it.

So is the building being demolished or just vacated? KCK won’t even have a downtown left if it tears down much more

Current owners (Kearns Brothers) got foreclosed on apparently. They had plans to renovate and convert a portion into apartments.

The building itself is on the National and State Historic Register as well as in the New Downtown KCK Historic District, also on the State Register. It easily has a chance to be saved, just need someone willing to do it.

Also worth noting, the 7th Street Methodist Church at 7th & State as well as the rest of the block has been brought down. This is in anticipation of KCKCC and a new Downtown Campus.

Update. Y-Lofts was able to be completed and is opening soon. https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/a ... 91785.html

Also, Willie Lanier's Reardon Center Redevelopment Agreement signed for another 9 months......hoping it can get off the ground here. City Hall Lofts at 6th & Ann is close to being issued permits to go vertical soon too.

I learned to swim at that Y. Still can smell the chlorine in my olfactory memories. Glad they saved some of the tile work from the pool.

I wish the former YMCA in downtown Kansas City at 10th and Oak had been converted to lofts and not demolished.

Single room occupancy and dormitory housing likely has a place in the affordable discussion. Legalize it!
