Re: 18th and Vine
Housing has always been the issue, keep building in the East Crossroads and now in the 18th/Vine and make the connection between the 2 as nice as possible.
All those Troost street/pedestrian attributes need to be implemented here. Bike lanes, extra wide sidewalks, streetscaping, road diets.
It'll happen.

Re: 18th and Vine
There is a a lot of room to build denser housing south of the District following Vine and Woodland. We have completely surrendered the bluffs back to nature there.
https://www.google.com/maps/@39.082917 ... !1e3?hl=en
They are not unlike the hills surrounding the Plaza. They can certainly be developed. It's needs to be denser housing. Single family housing wasn't successful there.
I still think it's a mistake putting single family housing on Mount Hope. See link below:
https://www.google.com/maps/@39.085448 ... !1e3?hl=en
One only has to go on Google Streetview in San Francisco to see how to develop steep areas with dense housing. There are also parcels west down 18th and 19th streets to Troost that need to be redeveloped with 6-7 story apartment buildings.
The City really needs to be vigilant about doing this type of dense housing if it is to survive financially in the future.

Re: 18th and Vine
Exactly, Kansas City struggles so much with blight and lack of density. I think if they can focus on connecting 18th and vine to crossroads and beacon hill, it will solidify this area a lot better. They need housing though.
I guess I didn’t realize how much land was empty in that area until I clicked on your link

Lack of dense housing to the west and south are among the primary reasons the Jazz District has never really been a successful endeavor. The museums were never going to be enough to stimulate the District.

Plan Calls for Historic Boone Theater to be Media Hub for 18th & Vine
Ugh. Pocket park.
https://cityscenekc.com/plan-calls-for- ... 18th-vine/The historic Boone Theater in the 18th & Vine District would be redeveloped as a media and entertainment center under a proposal backed by several influential Kansas City businesses and civic leaders.
...
The uses listed for the Boone Theater redevelopment proposal include a digital media lab, Black Movie Hall of Fame, YouTube studio, flexible event space, co-working space, an indoor/outdoor movie theater and food hub, including restaurants and food trucks.
A “pocket park” is planned for a vacant lot next door to the building.
In their proposal to the city, the Vine St. Collaborative states financing would come from the federal New Market Tax Credit program, state and federal historic tax credits, and money raised by investments in the federal Economic Opportunity Zone program.
...
The timetable calls for design and construction to begin next year with completion of the building restoration and the park to be completed by 2022.

While I thoroughly agree that there are a number of better uses... a pocket park is significantly better than keeping it as a vacant, non-maintained lot.FangKC wrote: ↑Wed Oct 07, 2020 9:45 pm Plan Calls for Historic Boone Theater to be Media Hub for 18th & Vine

The proposal presentation made it sound like they have active programming in mind for the park. One rendering had an outdoor movie set up on the exterior wall of the theatre.Anthony_Hugo98 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 08, 2020 11:56 amWhile I thoroughly agree that there are a number of better uses... a pocket park is significantly better than keeping it as a vacant, non-maintained lot.FangKC wrote: ↑Wed Oct 07, 2020 9:45 pm Plan Calls for Historic Boone Theater to be Media Hub for 18th & Vine

Re: 18th and Vine
Gateway Partners has filed plans with Historic Preservation for the Attucks School building.
https://compasskc.kcmo.org/EnerGov_Prod ... =locationsThe applicant plans an extensive rehabilitation of Attucks School to create a dynamic arts center containing offices, studios, meeting rooms, and event spaces. The exterior masonry will be restored, new roofing will be installed, and new windows that match those visible in historic plans and photo will be installed. A new addition on the rear elevation between the two blocks will comprise the new main entry and vertical circulation for the building. The west half, constructed in 1905, which retains a significant amount of historic fabric, will keep the existing historic configuration and finishes. The east half, constructed in 1922, has been significantly altered and retains little historic fabric. It will have some areas with open floor plans and exposed structure in the former classroom/corridor areas. The auditorium will be restored. The gymnasium will become an event space that is integrated into the adjacent area.

Re: 18th and Vine
The renovation of the Attucks School took a step forward today. The Historic Preservation Commission approved a Certificate of Appropriateness to renovate and expand the school. It will become a satellite location for the Zhou B Arts Center (out of Chicago). I think this is very exciting! Glad to see the old school get a new life. Also glad to have another art venue to expand upon our city's strong art scene. Check out their website.

They applied for a slate of plans and permits this week. Nothing super exciting in the documents. Glad it’s moving forward.Midtownkid wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 12:22 pm The renovation of the Attucks School took a step forward today.
