I'm actually kind of curious, what would happen if a city just ignored state law and refused to comply. Would the state start arresting people? Could the city use the police to protect them? This probably wouldn't work in KC since the city doesn't control the police, but interesting thought experiment.

It could also be a case of local police making arrests, but the county prosecutor deciding not to prosecute. Then we'd have to see if the state attorney general would intervene.

Right. Some prosecutors in Atlanta have already announced that they aren't going to enforce the new abortion law, but you can expect that the state will still enforce it. I actually have no idea what the laws say about this but I would assume there is probably some kind of mechanism for the governor to remove local officials who violate or refuse to enforce state law. If you're envisioning a confrontation between city and state police, that seems more like a broader political breakdown, in which case anything could potentially happen, but probably the first thing that would happen is that the National Guard would be mobilized to put down the insurrection.

It seems like a lot of GOP legislation is designed to punish the poor for being poor.

I don't think any of these abortion laws will materially affect whether or not someone in the middle class (especially upper class) or upper class will be able to receive an abortion. All one in any of these classes would have to do is hop in a car or in an airplane to a state where abortion is legal. What this does do is prevent those who cannot afford airfare / fuel / etc. from receiving access to abortion.

Kris Kobach's list of demands to become Trump's immigration czar is b-a-n-a-n-a-s
...
According to reporting Monday night by The New York Times, here's the list of Kobach's demands for him to be willing to sign on as immigration czar:

1. Office in the West Wing.
2. Walk-in privileges with the President.
3. Assistant to the President rank -- at highest pay level for WH senior staff.
4. Staff of 7 people (2 attorneys, 2 research analysts, 1 scheduler, 1 media person, 1 assistant).
5. POTUS sits down individually with czar and the secretaries of Homeland Security, Defense, Justice, Ag, Interior, and Commerce, and tells each of the Secretaries to follow the directives of the czar without delay, subject to appeal to the President in cases of disagreement.
6. 24/7 access to either a DHS or DOD jet. Czar must be on the border every week.
7. Ability to spend weekends in KS with family on way from border back to DC, unless POTUS needs czar elsewhere.
8. Security detail if deemed necessary after security review.
9. Serve as the face of Trump immigration policy -- the principal spokesman on television and in the media.
10. Promise that by November 1, 2019, the President will nominate Kris Kobach to be DHS Secretary, unless Kobach wishes to continue in Czar position.
The only thing missing from that list is bigger bread (or smaller lunch meat) on the backstage food platter.
I mean: 24/7 access to a private government plane? Outranking any/all Cabinet secretaries whose purview includes the border? Be THE FACE of the Trump White House's immigration efforts? ("Yes, Mr. Kobach, it's President Trump on line 1 for you.").

KMBC reporter Micheal Mahoney said on Kansas City Week in Review on KCPT tonight that it was the White House that leaked Kobach's demands, and it was to cut him off from the knees.

Reporter Steve Vockrodt posted this on his twitter account. It's a letter to the editor of The New York Times from a young woman in California, who wrote the admissions office at Washington University in St. Louis, saying she was no longer interested in pursuing admission there.

This might be the worst and most inane "well actually"-style response ever

Judge ruled today the clinic in St. Louis can stay open until a hearing next Tuesday.

Missouri's last abortion clinic to temporarily stay open in Planned Parenthood case
ST. LOUIS — A judge on Friday temporarily blocked Missouri from taking action that would have made the state the first in the U.S. since Roe v. Wade to not have a single abortion clinic.

Planned Parenthood, which now operates the only clinic in Missouri performing abortions, won a temporary restraining order from circuit court Judge Michael F. Stelzer. The clinic will stay open till at least Tuesday when there will be a hearing at 9 a.m. to consider a preliminary injunction.

Without Friday's court action, the St. Louis clinic's license for providing abortions would have expired at midnight.

Is it just me or is the media basically guaranteeing another Trump win? Mainly because all the media focuses on is AOC and Omar, i don't disagree with any of them say, i just think they need to be slowly introduced and the house/senate needs more of them if they want to get any policies changed but they are new house members who haven't really done anything and they need to back off.

These 2 basically gave the right endless negative ads that will focus on these 2 over the next year and half, they don't even need to focus on Hillary anymore, maybe not even Pelosi. Its almost as if the media is colluding with Trump to get him elected.

Reminder that we are still 15 months away from the election and whatever is happening now will very likely be forgotten about by then.

Kansas in Recovery

Eight years of state government atrophy may be coming to an end. But it will take a long time, and quite a bit of pain.

I've heard from City staff that apps to City Planning & Development have fallen to 2013 levels. I don't know what exactly that entails or means, bad or good. But doesn't seem promising.

Its weird how KC knows how to elect an admin icy to development exactly as a recession hits (probably). Double whammy.
