Great news! While the article highlights the bar/store aspect more than the grocer element, this will bring some more livability to the area. Hopefully this will be a fancy (and probably overpriced...) bodega.

I’m not optimistic for the grocery component. It’s a tough market and The Sundry recently failed in this area.

I’ll support them for food, but I’ve pledged my loyalty to Cellar Rat for booze (and they don’t carry Miller Lite).

Convivial Promises Namesake Vibe at New Shop in Former YJ’s Space
Chentell Shannon wants to keep the friendly, lively, enjoyable–in a word–“convivial” vibe of the former YJ’s Crossroads space when she opens her shop there May 1.

After all, Convivial is the name and spirit of the ceramics design and manufacturing firm she started in 2014.

Right now, it’s producing handmade products from its West Bottoms location that go out to more than 200 retailers around the country.

Brioche closed suddenly. Landlord boosted rent 25%. I suspect they have a tenant lined up that needs more than one retail stall, as neighboring tenants are also leaving due to the increase. Here's the tax history for that parcel, in case you were wondering if the boost was connected to that in some way:

What I don't understand is how lease renewal negotiations went right up until the point that Brioche was **suddenly** forced to be out of the premises by midnight. How were they so blindsided that their current situation was such a surprise?

That sucks. I really hope they can reopen. I think they were the best in town. My fingers are crossed for a collab w/ the future Thou Mayest flagship, something like the Ibis/Messenger combo.

One of the newscasts reported that the owners of Brioche missed the deadline for a lease extension at a lower rate. The owner of that strip of shops has always been ALL business - sucks to lose that business, but if you can get 25% more with another business...

Boy. That's brutal to force someone's business to close, dismantle and move under those circumstances. Especially when google maps shows that last May several of the units were empty.

Not exactly like we have the entire story. We don't know if the deadline was just missed and the landlord took the opportunity to kick them to the curb (which sounds bad) OR if the tenants were dicking around and not committing because they thought someone would give them a better deal.

I would be shocked if the lease extension deadline coincided with the end of the lease term. Landlords (for their own well-being) typically want an answer on extensions anywhere from 3 months to a year prior to the end of the term. I don't think I've ever encountered a "you have until the end of your lease term to negotiate with us on the terms of a lease extension". That just makes my skin crawl for EITHER party.

City Barrel Brewing has opened in the East Crossroads and if you’re looking for a full service restaurant and perhaps an “816” double dry hop blonde ale to wash it down, James Stutsman has just the a place.

“We’re bringing a wine bar approach to craft beer,” he said. “It’s an upper echelon focus with high-end beer in a unique environment.

“We can afford to do crazy, double-hopped beers.”

Last week, the new 8,000 square-foot brewpub at 1728 Holmes St. was hopping as City Barrel hosted its first 816 fundraiser for the KC Pet Project. All the proceeds from the sales of the brewer’s 816 label went to help the non-profit.

I checked out City Barrel recently and it definitely upped the brewery game in the crossroads.

The space itself is great. I wasn't expecting it to be so big. Though I haven't tried the food menu yet, it looks fantastic and I will definitely be back just to try it. Their beers were all very interesting and high quality (especially for just opening). many of their sour styles are somewhat unique to KC and may require people to get out of their comfort zone. I thought it was cool they had other brewery beers available as well and a full cocktail program. Definitely more than "just" a brewery.

Yeah, I mentioned it in the Cocktails thread, but their drink menu is legit.

Glad they had it too - because while their beer is good quality - you're either drinking a fruity/sour/champagne thing or a heavily hopped pale/IPA. For my personal taste, I'd like to see some of these new places actually craft a friggin' brown/amber ale that's not hopped to death - and maybe mix in a porter/stout. I find heavily hopped beers to be relatively unimpressive, unimaginitive and unenjoyable. /old man rant.

The food was good. I had the Pork Chop - really enjoyed it.

I spoke to the chef before they opened and he said the pork chop was the menu item he was most excited about.

I'm intrigued. To me, a pork chop is the least exciting item on a menu (maybe after a turkey burger). I feel just about anything on a restaurant menu is more appealing than the pork chop offering - what about this pork chop is going to elevate it from other menu items or other restaurants?

a great pork chop can be as good as any steak, chicken, duck, etc. dish you can imagine. but yeah, great ones are kind of few and far between, and people tend to overcook pork chops. the last time i had the pork chop at potpie, it was fantastic.

for a while, broadway butcher had these ridiculous aged pork chops that i would grill at home and it was one of the best and easiest things we've ever cooked.

Totally agree. I love craft beer and I'll check this place out eventually, but I haven't been yet because sours and IPAs are too overdone and I just can't get myself excited about it. Hmm, just off the top of my head, locally - Casual Animal, Cinder Block, and Stockyards all offer solid variations of these styles (or at least stouts, porters and lagers). I'm sure there are many others, particularly the stuff outside the Crossroads/central city.

I wish there were more delicious sours and truly weird things being brewed. Still think Crane is the best craft brewery in the city, and one of the best in the state.

But I digress - should move to beer thread.
