Church officials could not be reached for comment, but a source familiar with the project said the approximately $10 million renovation will follow historic preservation standards and be completed in about 14 months. A bid document for the project was released in July.

About the only thing I'll give credit to Scientology is they like their old fancy buildings.
As interim owners until they implode, they do keep their buildings well maintained.

Re: OFFICIAL - City Bank Building (Church of Scientology)
Regardless of feelings about Scientology, I am relieved that this building was saved in more or less its original form. My grandfather operated his brokerage on the mezzanine level of this building in the 1920s (the bank leased out multiple floors to tenants). I have some of the stationery, but sadly no pictures of his offices.

If the lobby was saved\restored it is a big win. It is a stunner.

I had a hard time telling if the beautiful painted beams were still in place. Would be hard to believe they would be demo'ed.
The giant Gothic light fixtures were removed from the front, too bad.
I actually think the sign is cool. Glad there will still be a huge sign on top, regardless of what it is for.

The sign looks pretty cool so far.
Now hoping the Mainmark Building would add one.

Am I the only one who doesn't like rooftop signs in general? Street level signs at least add to the streetscape and tell you about what's in the ground floor of a building, but rooftop signs are essentially just giant advertisements that typically don't complement the building itself at all.
I never looked out from liberty memorial and thought, "Wow, I want to visit 1201 Walnut now that \\ S T I N S O N has moved in"

signage on buildings make cities look busier and more lively from a distance. i don't mind it at all.

Anyone else notice that they've covered up the letters on the rooftop sign so you can't read them?
