There is a lot of vacant land west of the speedway that this could go in.
Why does the KC area need a third hockey arena? There's two already and only one team.

Lamar Hunt, Jr. has bought a USHL team.

I saw a rumor(?) somewhere that he's trying to build up the hockey infrastructure in KC to build more of a fanbase for an NHL team. If that's the case, then spreading the teams out makes sense.

...until you actually want to bring the NHL here. then what do you do with all of the existing franchises and arenas? expect them to fail?

They're not really the same thing, though. A 4,000 seat arena and a 6,000 seat arena are completely different from an 18,000 seat arena. I would also imagine that the season ticket holders for minor league/junior hockey are very different from the NHL but having the teams/sheets/junior infrastructure would generate a ton of interest in the sport.

Kansas City has 4 pro soccer teams. The T-Bones coexist with the Royals. The USHL is amateur junior hockey, so it's not exactly going to have the expenses of a pro team. Waterloo, IA, a city smaller than Lawrence, has a USHL team. The Mavericks have carved out an audience of their own. The NHL would need to pull from the whole area and needs that interest. I personally think an NHL team could be successful here now but it's Hunt's money.

What's happening with the "Legends South" development across I-70 south of Hollywood Casino? Nothing has been done at the site in months it looks like. News releases from last year say two hotels were to be finished by "mid-2018". A major retailer that was aligned with Nascar was to open there, but apparently that isn't the case now.

That unneeded mess is happening in Edwardsville and the city doesn't seem to be talking.

Obviously this thing is stalled. The site has weeds growing on it now.

Looks like it has switched to a Hard Rock Hotel along with a potential "events center".

Here's a little flashback to when the Hollywood casino was going to be a Hard Rock casino...

I don't really get the draw of a Hard Rock Hotel in such an isolated area if there's no casino attached. Maybe if it were closer to the Legends, certainly downtown but I guess with this being the nicest hotel in WyCo and western JoCo it will do OK.

So if a Hard Rock Hotel can make a go of it in that location, why is Hollywood refusing to add a hotel? They have a hotel at their other property (Argosy) and soon-to-be third property (Ameristar) - are they just not wanting to cannibalize rooms?

All good questions. It's especially interesting that Hard Rock would build a hotel in a more isolated location, with no attached casino, while Hollywood is paying ~$1.4 million/year to WyCo in order to not build a hotel. I was curious as to whether they were actually paying the penalty, and found an audit document saying they've been paying the penalty every year since 2014.

It would be interesting to know whether Hollywood knew in advance it was Hard Rock coming and still decided not to build, or if WyCo and Hard Rock let it be a surprise.

What a bizarre location for a stand alone hard rock hotel. Please tell me this is not another STAR bonded project. That would probably explain a lot. You can “force” a development to happen when you throw enough money at it.

I haven't seen mention of STAR bonds but the Edwardsville website states...

"This announcement kicked off a series of administrative steps that the Edwardsville City Council undertook in support of the project including a combination of financial incentives."

Not really surprising the city would be helping, but their population is only 4,300 so I'm guessing that assistance is limited.

A Hard Rock would look so much better in the Pile of Debris location (Isle of Capri) right along the river - This location makes no sense unless it has gambling
Hell putting this in downtown KCK next to the 7th street casino would make more sense than this
