The tide is changing as MO side of KC metro has been growing jobs at a faster rate than KS side lately. From Feb 2016 to 2017 MO side of KC metro added over 23K jobs (4% increase) while KS side added only 4500 (1% increase).
Though KS side is growing more establishments/wages than MO side while MO side growing more jobs.

What does number of establishments mean? Number of businesses?

Re: Metro Employment Stats
Essentially yes, that represent the employment base in next column. So KS side probably has more small startups representing lower employment boost. MO side employment boost likely mostly from existing biz.

We feel that Kansas City is one of the cities we’re in across the country that is poised for economic expansion,” Jankowitz said. “So we’re looking for people to staff our banking centers, personal bankers, financial advisers and commercial lenders.
Bank of America also has been placing financial advisers from Merrill Lynch inside its area branches and is providing personal bankers and financial solutions providers who can help clients with less than $250,000 in net worth plan for retirement.
“If you want to see what the banking center of the future is going to look like for Bank of America, go to our location in Liberty,” Jankowitz said. All of the bank's locations in the Kansas City area eventually will be modernized to look more like the Liberty location, he said.

Re: Metro Employment Stats
KC Metro Professional Biz Services employment hit 200K for the first time, per capita higher than rest of Midwest and more comparable to hot cities % wise like DFW/ATL.
Last two decades KS side had most of ProBiz services jobs but this decade MO side of metro slightly higher overall...
KS Side of metro...
STL metro in comparison is only 220K even though almost 1/3 larger than KC metro.

Re: Metro Employment Stats
Half of KC's metro Pro/Biz employment is Scientific and Technical Services, over 100K of the 200K above post, also higher than rest of midwest per capita and more comparable to hot markets.
The MO side of KC metro has most of the sci/tech jobs and growth...
KS side of metro, growth slowed last few years...
STL metro in comparison only has about 86K sci/tech jobs compared to KC's 100K.

Re: Metro Employment Stats
Put another way, nearly 10% of KC metro employment is in Sci/Tech services, likely to exceed 10% next several years given one of faster growth segments. Not as high as Austin but comparable to Denver, higher than DFW/ATL % wise and rest of Midwest.
KC Telcom jobs took a big hit last two decades though due to Sprint demise, which is in another category.
