Favorite Special Occasion Restaurant?

Post by Highlander »

Thought I'd ask this question since we'll soon be in KC to celebrate our anniversary. We've hit Novel, Bristol and Grunauer's in recent years but the KC restaurant scene has changed a lot since we last celebrated the event there (2 years ago) and we were wanting something different. Any ideas?

These are some of the newer spots I've had a good experience at:
The Antler Room.
Corvino.
Brown&Loe.
The Oliver.

If you want a fancy steak house, Stock Hill plays the part pretty darn well.

Not as new places that are solid if you haven't been:
Affare.
Voltaire.

Places I haven't been, but want to check out:
Krokstrum Klubb
Rye (on the plaza)
Cafe Europa (union hill)

Edit: and just FYI- They're all fantastic in my opinion, but I did put them in rank order

Good suggestions. Antler Room and Corvino may have pricey small plates but they both deliver. Maybe the better of the list for any 'special occasion for two' as well as Krokstrum (Scandinavian). These three offer more tasty variety you can share. Stock Hill a good suggestion if wanting something more substantial than small eats.

Cafe Europa at UH our new favorite for breakfast, haven't had lunch|dinner there yet. Tried Rye on Plaza - upscale comfort food leaning menu, a little disappointed with the farm 'theme' concept (servers in flannel and overalls), but the Plaza is a mall so... For special occasion, would stick with their original Bluestem.

Antler Room is my new favorite. They also have one of the best brunches in town (Sunday).

Justus Drugstore in Smithville is my personal "special occasion" fave, easily.

Also will second Krokstromm on Broadway.

This is where we ended up for our special occasion. We loved it.

Some great suggestions here but we had never been to le fou frog and thought it was about time to give it a shot. Next year its going to be the Antler Room.

our trips to KC are commonly food excursions and this holiday experience was no different. Got a BBQ fix at Jack Stacks in the Crossroads, tried Cafe Europa at lunch (that place is a winner), Minsky's, Succotash (it was packed; they are in desperate need of a foyer to keep the frigid temps out), Grinders, and of course Le Fou Frog.
