Dang, I was going to share that same article but you beat me to the punch! I'm glad we have a mayor willing to put his life on the line for this great city.scooterj wrote:It's down to KC vs Pittsburgh...

Re: Amazon searching for second HQ
I have heard talk that Amazon might be considering buying Cerner, although I don't know if this has any basis in reality. There have been more credible reports that Amazon is considering getting into the EHR game, so this may not be too far fetched.
This might boost KC's chances for HQ2, but I hope they wouldn't go to Three Trails (although if they did, they might be able to turn it into an actual functioning mixed-use district, rather than some office buildings in a sea of parking).

Already in the field (https://www.cnbc.com/2017/07/26/amazon- ... oject.html).
With their software prowess, only one reason to consider anything with Cerner – buy them out and take over their contracts.

Re: Amazon searching for second HQ
The Amazon skunkworks seems mostly exploratory and probably isn't really designed to be a business. (yet)
I think that if any of the big four tech giants make any serious moves in that space, they will make an acquisition of a pre-existing company (because hospitals hate switching, so it is hard to gain market share without acquisition) and then they will keep it mostly separate and independent, for the optics. It would look bad for hospitals to be giving medical data Amazon, even though it would be kept separate and not used for anything. Handing it over to Cerner or Epic, controlled by amazon, wouldn't look nearly as bad.
Or, maybe privacy is dead. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well not exactly a purchase, but it does appear that a partnership between Amazon and Cerner may be happening. I don't know if it would significantly help our chances for HQ2, but it sure doesnt hurt:KCtoBrooklyn wrote:I have heard talk that Amazon might be considering buying Cerner.

Listening to Kevin Collison on KCUR's 'Up To Date'...
Did I hear him correctly? Did he say that the riverfront was the only downtown site pitched to Amazon? No North Loop or East Village?
Edit: Yes, he just repeated that. Sad to hear.

So, it is pretty safe to say we have no vision and we aren't getting the HQ, right?

I heard that on Up to Date, as well. Didn't they have to get height variances approved by the FAA to build the Bond bridge? i would assume any HQ2 development would feature buildings at least that tall or taller. Is the FAA variance just a formality or could building height be in jeopardy if the riverfront ended up winning?

Whatever, Amazon would screw us anyways. I’m not sure a giant, subsidized campus would be good for downtown anyways. We should focus on attracting lots of regional offices, not sell ourselves short for 1 giant employer.
Still it’s very clear there’s a severe lack of vision amongst city leadership.

Most of the time, it is hard to tell if the city leadership lacks vision or is just pragmatic and realistic about the voter base... but on this Amazon thing, you've got to go all out. The riverfront is easy because it is shovel ready, but it is far from an ideal location.
After I heard about some of the incentives that other cities offered, it quickly became clear that we don't want this anyway. We can barely scrape together enough money for a new bridge, we would not be able to cope with Amazon with almost no additional direct tax revenue.

Re: Amazon searching for second HQ
Abstaining from participation in the amazon con-game/ad campaign is the only response that would demonstrate vision.
