You won't be surprised to know that the local preservation community played a major role. Also Jim Glover ran an inept campaign. She's beatable in 2019.

It seems like we recycle the same damn people! Glover v. Shields was our option? Come on! There are so many dynamic people in this district. And there should be a limit on how many lawyers can be on the council. Time for some new blood.

You got my vote.

The moratorium on design may be illegal. Regardless, the survey is meaningless unless there is an accompanying attempt to create an overlay district in Westport that either creates a separate demolition review for historic properties and/or mandates design standards. I am speculating about that, but there is currently a movement afoot to amend the PMAP and extend the Plaza "bowl" north to 43rd.

Surprised that nobody's mentioned Shields' proposals that parking be built into the cost of rent on new apartment units. Talk about poor policy.

I was wondering if that was the case. How likely is an illegal moratorium capable of gumming up the works?

this is type of thing that has the state auditor in flames (not the streetcar TDD, which was voted on by residents).
How has the continued existence of the Plaza TDD factored into the creation of the new streetcar TDD?
not a factor at all. it's no different than the "1200 Main" TDD that existed (a sales tax for pretty much the exact same purpose: garages for one developer/owner) when the downtown TDD was formed in 2012.

pew-pew-pew! http://www.kansascity.com/news/local/cr ... 46168.html

if this is happening while the streets are already blocked off, what makes the westport business league thinks metal detectors or wands will prevent it (or even reduce it) when they "own" the street?

And it doesn't address the continuing problems on the periphery - the intersection of 40th and Penn has been a problem for years and there was just an incident behind the AC Hotel a week or so ago.

Actions with just Westport can't solve KC's overall gun crime culture as it needs a broader focus. But could shutting down Westport say 1AM Fri/Sat reduce it a bit? Might be worth trying one summer.

they do that already with a festival permit.

the business league/CID want to wand patrons for guns, which they can't do if the space is public (for fear of an ACLU lawsuit).

of course, they will still get sued but it will be the westport CID that takes the hit and not the city.

Vacating part of Mill Street for the Manor Square hotel is on this week's council legislative agenda.

By shutting down at 1AM I meant the bars, not the streets. I don't think privatizing the streets will make much of a difference as problems happen with outskirts of Westport. If privatizing the streets, would it be fairly easy to go back? Can see it opening another can of worms.

The vacation would need to be permanent in order for the wanding to pass a court challenge. It can't look like an end run around the legislature.

yup. we've been told "lawyers have been looking at this for years and this is the only solution".

Why don't the individual bars start wanding or doing pat downs? Or are they already?

Does anybody yet know what this vacation specifically proposes? It doesn't really make sense to me, unless the driveway to the garage is officially part of Mill Street or they want to narrow the road slightly or something.
...can someone share a link to the plans?
