Some coworkers of mine wrote a script to parse the Google Fiber signup page and get detailed information on the actual numbers required for each fiberhood to qualify. This script just spits out the fiberhood-level numbers, so I calculated the higher-level stats.

The numbers below are as of this morning:

Code: Select all

Fiberhood Name	Total Households	% Required	Number Registered	Invites Needed	Current %	% of Goal
Total KCMO C 100672 8.77% 26485 8831 26.31% 299.91%
Total KCK 55868 9.79% 10657 5468 19.08% 194.90%

Total KCMO S 65453 8.58% 16694 5618 25.51% 297.15%
Total KCMO NW 36806 12.25% 11144 4508 30.28% 247.20%
Total KCMO NE 53154 10.82% 11366 5753 21.38% 197.57%

Very interesting. Does that equate to market penetration of roughly a quarter, or is it even higher because not all homes are consumers of cable/internet? It is a pretty amazing customer heist for that much money to be on the line.

I'm in south KC and got my Fiber install email today. I don't know if it's because we're in a suburb, but things have moved pretty fast here, compared to what I've read happened in the core.

Contractor trucks were in the neighborhood starting in late January and were across from my house by mid February, marking lines and putting in conduit (I think).

Signups started March 11, my fiberhood qualified the first day, and signups ended April 11th.

June 1st, someone stopped by to put in the box on the back of the house and someone else came June 2nd to do some sort of line testing or something. I didn't speak to that person, but my husband asked about the timeline after the box was installed and was told that people have generally received the install email within about a week.

Today (June 6th), I received the email to schedule install, with the first available appointment being June 23rd.

So, from the first time I saw any related trucks in the neighborhood to install will be about 5 months, which was faster than I had anticipated, considering some of the things I've read about people waiting months or years after qualifying. I do think it's interesting that they seemed to be putting in the fiber backbone before south KC signups started. Was this the case for those of you who live in the core or did they wait until signups were over to start tackling neighborhoods?

Our business got a phone call today inviting us to their westport office for an informational meeting. I'm hoping it's about business fiber and not that I'm on the wrong list.

HDMI 1.4 - sounds like they are prepping for 4K TV and 4K Netflix. The current TV boxes can act as a WiFi repeater but has a 200Mbps limit, maybe this will bump it up. The 10/100 NIC sounds like error because existing has 1000 today. It can do up to 200 hardwired on current TV box, hopefully they boost that. MoCA 2.0 indicates up to 800Mbps - not bad for a repeater.

The WiFi radios in the current hardware are utterly worthless so no surprise they are pushing out new hardware so soon. Frankly surprised they haven't caught more public heat for it. The support forums paint a pretty clear picture that anyone paying any attention to speeds goes down the road of a personal router.

Yeah, I hooked up my own 802.11ac router but is annoying it's difficult to completely replace existing router. You can attach in AP mode but can't set Google's with DMZ or bridge mode, which means you still have to user their crappy port forward settings, etc.

The find above is just the TV box, not the network box but hopefully a full featured 802.11ac network box is coming too.

Will be interesting to see if they roll new boxes out to existing customers, as you technically own the hardware.

There are rumors of a larger rollout of the new Android TV at the Google I/O conference next week. I took a look at the schedule and found the session title of "Building set-top box UIs with Dart" which gives me hope they may be opening up their set-top box experience. I can also hope that they make the new Google Fiber devices capable of handling the cable TV/wifi function along with the Android TV function.

Another scheduled event mentioned making Google Play more "global." This could mean that they are encouraging people to sell their products globally, that the Play store will be available in more places, or ideally, that Play will be integrated with more devices (one hopes the TV box). Google Play All Access on the set top would be very nice.

Would like to see Chromecast receiver built into TV box, should be fairly easy to add. My Chromecast dongles take up an extra HDMI port on TV.

I find it mildly humorous that Google Now's TV recommendation function recognizes like two dozen cable/DBS for my midtown zip code (including every obscure provider no one has ever heard of) but no Google Fiber.

the equation is almost perfect as an area goes for the telco. where this equation broke down took the longest to qualify.

it's suburban dense, much like Waldo. there's a lot of small lot developments tons of apartment complexes scattered about.
it's full of lower middle class which has money for Internet but is still price sensitive

Anyone able to get over 400Mbps on Windows hardwired? I have a modern Haswell/Core i7 based laptop that can get over 900Mbps on Linux but only 400 or so on Win8 - exact same hardware. Maybe it's poor Windows drivers for that laptop but I have yet to see any Windows computer get much over 400.
