my current job actually has their fiber installed to our datacenter already. the residential fiber conduit ran within 10 feet of it and we persuaded the install team to just run the actual line to us at the same time

no way to get service yet but we're so ready we would just need them to sign us up and bring a modem out

No, just that we use it as our primary internet and provide "feedback". Sounds like they will cherry pick some companies based on certain criteria. Included a survey asking about business needs, company size, physical plant, etc.

I'm hoping they're looking for a small company, say 12 employees? (fingers crossed)

The City needs to use this as a tool to attract small companies while still unique to KC. This news could have even more ecodev impact for KC.

1000mbit is enough for hundreds of employees and servers to support them. It's not just about small, a crazy competitive commercial connection could attract larger business to the metro

This is something that would be worth signing an limited time exclusivity agreement for KC.

Google Fiber was run to a business in a mixed use building in the River Market last week.

Google Fiber customer service rep told me yesterday that they will begin to offer service to such businesses in the RM (located in mixed use office/residential properties) within two weeks.

This really could be a big deal to additionally boost economic development for KC when startups/SMBs can have this at office as well as home for all employees. Everyone could be within the Google Fiber metro network (not hopping outside to other networks). Am eager to see the terms. Also would hope they don't use the same router (Net Box) as home fiber, as it is not at all usable for business class.

Ecodev people in KC need to understand what this means and proactively get the word out.

AT&T announced KC area as one of 'candidates' for their Gigabit service - Independence, Kansas City, Leawood, Overland Park, and Shawnee. The ATT implementation apparently shares 2.5Gbit in a neighborhood whereas Google's delivers near 1Gbit to most users in a fiberhood, but still should be a good performer for most part.

Good news for OP and Indy as they don't have agreement with Google yet.

More competition is a good thing. I just hope AT&T is really serious - so far not so much http://gigaom.com/2014/04/21/hey-att-en ... gawashing/

Found this list of apts/condos that have Google Fiber. About 400 buildings/complexes so far...
https://fiber.google.com/propertymanage ... partments/

So if avg comes to 50 units per building/complex, that's at least 20K units that can get free 5M with option to upgrade (or 12K if avg is 30 units).

Google Fiber will have the SEC Network. Not sure if it will be in "basic" tier or sports package.

UPDATE:
SEC Network will be part of Google Fiber’s basic TV package in all Google Fiber markets

pash wrote:Google Fiber has an outdoor WiFi network up and running in Crown Center. It seems they're considering doing a broader rollout of outdoor wireless networks around the city.

There have also been rumors over the past several months that Google is contemplating providing mobile phone and Internet service in its fiber markets. The idea would be to use the fiber network for backhaul, set up comprehensive outdoor WiFi networks that would handle most mobile traffic, and operate as an MVNO for fallback and to provide service outside subscribers' home markets.
Considering how much money the cell phone providers are racking out of our wallets each month, this could be a big deal.

Google Fiber doing well in KC according to survey.

Up to 83% in high income areas, around 75% avg (of homes passed by Google) and below 30% in lowest income areas. Most are going for Gbit only.

That is probably way higher uptake than most would expect. I was thinking 30 to maybe 50%. Though it's a survey, not actual numbers from Google.

I'm not surprised.

A premium time warner connection costs more than theirs does. Mine is up around $85/month and I have the second fastest option

If TW would have any sign they were doing actual upgrades to their network I bet they would have way less turnover. If they were bumping the base speed into the 100-250mbit range over the past few years few people would notice the difference and it would be a harder sell

But going from 10-20mbit to 1000 you can sell the difference, expecially since they're cost competitive at TW's higher end plans
