Good showing. People in Austin are melting down that KC is attracting more people than their hipster magnet.

Missouri: Pro Baseball
Cardinals backers love to laud themselves as the country's greatest, most knowledgeable baseball fans. Though I hate to reward such pridefulness, it's undeniable that—as compared to promiscuous Bay Staters, who love the Sox, but also the Pats, the Celts, and the Bruins—the Show Me State's relationship with the national pastime is a monogamous one. The Kansas City Royals also play here, and as noted in the Illinois entry, Missouri has even succeeded in recruiting much of that state to join its baseball militia. Brainwashing of that order must be rewarded
lol...the Royals also play here.

Travel's Best Halloween Attractions 2013

KC West Bottoms' Haunted Houses (Kansas City, MO)

“On Kansas City’s west side is one of the most unique haunted venues I’ve ever had the displeasure of visiting. The KC West Bottoms area is made up of several late 19th-century buildings that were just made to be haunted houses! This “village of the damned” has 4 -- count ’em 4 -- epic haunts: The Beast, The Chambers of Edgar Allan Poe, Macabre Cinema and the granddaddy of ’em all, The Edge of Hell -- each one is a unique, must-see experience for haunted house afflict-cianados.” -- Elvira, Mistress of the Dark

Budget Travel - 10 Incredible World Landmarks You Haven't Seen

Sea Life Aquarium
Kansas City, Missouri
Landlocked Kansas City landed a big one in April with the debut of a $15 million aquarium, run by the global franchise Sea Life and part of the new downtown complex, Crown Center. Awash with more than 5,000 fish swimming in 260,000 gallons of water, the complex takes visitors on a virtual educational trip, from the Missouri River to the Mississippi and then onward to the Caribbean. Get nose-to-nose with the star attractions: manta rays and sharks. Then simulate the experience of being underwater by wandering through a tunnel between sections of a giant tank filled with a Technicolor cluster of exotic fish[LM6] . The aquarium's touch pool, an interactive exhibit, lets kids (carefully) pet small animals like starfish. 2475 Grand Blvd., visitsealife.com/Kansas-city. Adults from $18, kids 3-12 from $15.

As far as external validation of the city goes, a good friend of mine mentioned that in the many NYC social circles he travels in, KC is "a definite topic, more relevant than Chicago."
People are associating it with "the arts moreso than cows." He went on to mention internet-famous artists like Ssion, Peggy Noland and also Boulevard beers.

My friends in Sydney were completely taken by KC. They don't think the PAC is a ripoff of the Syd Opera House (it's not). They found it to be the complete American experience. They said they frequently look at KC info on the web and talk fondly about the Plaza, Gates, Union Station. It was also one of the only stops where everyone acknowledged their accent and asked where they were from. They joked no one even noticed in LA.

I had some similar experiences in NYC, although I thought it to be an anomaly due to running in a social circle with a number of other KC expats who love KC and speak highly of it. I received a few comments of "oh, you're from KC? I really need to check it out, I hear a lot of great stuff.. etc"

Also, many of the KC expats are rather talented and successful in music and the arts so I heard people remark about the arts culture in KC.

However, these experiences were definitely in the minority when it comes to the general public - I heard more comments about how it must be such a shock to be living in a city.

You two might know one another.
I only chime in about KC when on social media people are complaining about their living expenses. Why do they even attempt NYC?

KC also ranked 10th as best for 'hipsters'...
http://www.travelandleisure.com/article ... rs-2013/11

The T&L list is just a list but interesting indicator of how outsiders perceive KC. Didn't see for 2013 but for 2012 they had over 40K participants in poll, much larger than most Fed polls.

Other KC rankings (out of 35 cities polled)...
Affordability 1
BBQ 3?
Flea Markets 4
Microbrew 5
Classical Music 5
Farmer's Markets 6
Museum/Galleries 7
Theatre/perform art 9
Coffee 10
Happy Hour 11
Tech Savvy 11
Stylish 12
Intelligent 13
Ethnics Eats 22 (though higher than Denver/Austin)

Not surprisingly low in..
People-watching 25
Singles scene 27

Curious that Chicago/MSP/KC are only Midwest cities polled.

Is there a comment thread where they're freaking out or is this your assumption?

I know this isn't exactly a ranking article of any sort, but apparently we're #1 in running quasi-legal online payday loan businesses.
