Re: New User Registration
How hard would it be to install captcha or something like one of those "what is 2+2" things?

Eric Bunch said he's been trying to join for months without success. So he just lurks instead. (Hi, Eric)grovester wrote:Who's in charge of new accounts? I see that Carnell Manning is our latest use from what April? Is everyone anonymous now?

Re: New User Registration
I have no idea how to do any of this stuff. I hate to put it all on mean all the time, so yea, some sort of automated system would probably work better.

Re: New User Registration
We tried a captcha, and ended up with a billion spambots. I don't have a good solution and bahua has been MIA for years now.

Re: New User Registration
The webhost we're using has written me to say that they're disabling our email because of the tens of thousands of activation emails that are being sent as a result of spambot registrations. Spambots eat up "anti-spam" measures for breakfast. Captcha, math, and "prove your humanity" challenges are completely ineffective. It isn't 2001 anymore. Spambot programmers can actually write effective code now.
Therefore, the only new accounts out of the literally thousands of automated emails I get are the ones who write me directly, frustratedly asking to be activated. Personally, I would prefer this method. I think I'll put an announcement up.

Also, tweeting @kcrag or @thekcrag won't get to me. I don't use twitter. I own @kcrag, but I haven't touched it since the great biped carnivores roamed the landscape in the late Cretaceous period. Maybe I'll dust it off, but the 100% best way to get your account activated is to send a real-live human-style email to kcrag.admin@gmail.com, and for f's sake, include the username!

Two people have availed themselves of this newly clarified system, and staubio has sent an email making fun of it. Keep them coming.

As one of those two people who got an account activated in that time frame, it's good to be here.bahua wrote:Two people have availed themselves of this newly clarified system, and staubio has sent an email making fun of it. Keep them coming.
I'll stand by for the hazing induction ceremony.
