Re: Blogs about KC visits
Here's something bizarre coming out of KC Xroads culture lately that is turning heads around the world. This guy (KC art institute student) is touring all over the place. Filmed/produced out of Xroads...

And then there is Quixotic getting national recognition, which is a collaboration of several KC artists of various forms. KC's theatre scene is also very strong, significantly stronger than any country music culture that ever happened (if ever happened) in KC. For a city to develop notable cultures, it usually has to output something that is recognized by the outside, not just consume it internally.

The 2 biggest music acts that have KC origins that have come out in the past in recent years are Tech N9ne and Janelle monae. Sure Monae is based out of ATL but any country act out of here would probably be based in Nashville. Also, I don't count David Cook.

Re: Blogs about KC visits
That article was horrible. Country Music is huge everywhere, Kenny Cheseny just played sold out shows at Target Field and Solider Field, most of the largest radio stations in the Midwest in terms of ratings are almost always country music. If Garth Brooks didn't end doing those 8 shows for Walmart a company that has close ties to KC, he would have probably done the shows in Vegas or some other large city.ChefColby wrote:http://www.kansascity.com/2012/07/13/37 ... kc-so.html
Ironic that this is in the Star today....
You could actually make the arguement that Los Angeles has more of a Cowboy Culture/Country Music scene then a lot of the Midwest because of Gene Autry, Will Rogers, Dwight Yoakam and the tons of Okies that settle in LA during the 30's
Re: Blogs about KC visits
Why can't KC be big and expansive enough to include cowboys AND mobsters, country AND jazz? What is it you're ashamed of? Same damn inferiority complex that's always swirled around the city. The only difference between Portland and KC,2 very similar cities, is that Portland and Oregon have embraced their agricultural roots and turned it into something special, not something to be ashamed of.

I love country music. At least, what I perceive to be country music, which does not really include Kenny Chesney or that guy who wants to bomb all of the mideast.

Ha. I should have put a sarcasm symbol in there. It was more a commentary on how many people exploit xenophobia and anti-Islamic sentiment in modern country music. Four legs good, two legs bad.mean wrote:You know, he had a hit called Iraq I Will Kick Your Ass or something.

BBC: Kansas City's Midwest renaissance
Prohibition classics, recreated
It seems fitting that mixology-driven cocktail bars, many of which pay homage to the city’s speakeasy days, are a driving force in the rebirth of Kansas City’s nightlife. In 2009, the 48-seat Manifesto lounge opened in the basement of a restaurant called 1924 Main, only to close a year later when the restaurant shut its doors. Instead of calling it quits or looking for another location, owner Ryan Maybee (who also launched the Paris of the Plains Cocktail Festival) partnered with chef Howard Hanna to open a new incarnation as a restaurant and bar in the same space the following year. The new restaurant was named The Rieger Hotel Grill & Exchange, a nod to the previous tenant, the Rieger Hotel, which opened in the building in 1914. From 1877 to 1919, the Rieger family also ran a small whiskey production, which they advertised with a mural on the building’s south wall; when Maybee opened the new restaurant, he restored the faded billboard to its original look.

Would anyone care to cut and paste the entire article here? I've tried the link here as well as several on FB and they all lead to dead ends. Can't figure out why!?!
