Omaha's music scene

Post by omahahonors »

rated #5 by livability.com for cities not including NYC, LA and Nashville..

Also an excerpt from: http://www.expressnightout.com/2012/03/ ... e-of-mind/

Omaha, Neb., may better known for insurance companies than for indie bands. But visiting the Gateway to the West was a dream come true for Swedish sister act First Aid Kit (Johanna and Klara Söderberg), on par with a pilgrimage to Memphis or Motown.

That might sound surprising, but Omaha has produced its share of great indie acts whose popularity extends across the Atlantic and into the chillier climes of Scandinavia.

“Omaha has always been a Mecca for us because of the music scene,” says Johanna. “It’s always been this mysterious place where all this magical music came from.”

I love First Aid Kit. Isn't Saddle Creek records in Omaha? A lot of good music from them over the years...

Yes. Saddle Creek Records was named after a Creek in midtown. The label moved to North Downtown where one of the nation's finest indie music venue exists (the slowdown). We have several top music festivals which range from big named bands mixed with indie in the new Red Sky Music festival to the Maha indie music festival, Jazz on the green, the symphony, Manheim SteamRoller is from here as well. The Centurylink Center is in the top 10 for most concert ticket sales in the nation to go along with a very highly regarded amphitheatre called the Stir Cove at nearby Harrah's casino (on the Council Bluffs side of the Missouri river with a great view of downtown). A few blocks to the north (south side of the architectural award winning pedestrian bridge) is a very large new green space under construction with another large amphitheatre where vendors can set up shops etc. Another venue is the Holland Performing Arts center and the $150 million dollar Baseball stadium (which Red Sky uses).

Three high-rise hotels (14 story new construction, 12 story Federal Building renovation and a ten story new construction) have been recently announced to go along with several other new smaller hotels, and a new construction 600 room Hilton that just finished expanding.

Also consider the thousands of new condos, apartments and row houses built in and around the downtown area.

Well, actually it's named for the street... the creek hasn't existed for over 100 years. :)

Blah blah blah gooey butter cake KC wants to visit St. Louis. :)

We have asked for forgiveness, and pulled out our old Cursive albums. :D

You all are very 1960s St. Louis-ish. Got the solid geographical layout, to be sure.

Bulletproof, that is.

I'm overdo the fuck a visit myself..
