I know there are 3 leading credit rating agencies, but how do I check and what's a typical rate?

you get 1 free credit report a year (not a score), which was mandated by the legislation few years ago.

I'd start with that since it's free and legit, unlike some other places that advertise with jingles on tv and radio

I believe typical good scores are between 600-700. A bad score will be below 550. A great score will be above 700.
