Back-in angled parking
The City Council is discussing an idea that would require parking in certain specific areas - probably either in the Crossroads or the River Market - to be back-angled parking. This is angled parking that is against the flow of traffic, requiring the driver to have to back into the parking space. The reason for this is that when drivers back out of normal angled parking spots, they have little visibility, and this causes accidents with bikers in the bike lane. They want to test back-angled parking in a high-bike area like the Crossroads or the River Market to see if it can be expanded. The goal is to eventually replace a lot of the parallel parking in the city to back-angled parking.

Back-in angled parking
pretty sure the area in front the brookside market was also being discussed as a pilot project.

Back-in angled parking
Two locations will be pilot projects for back-in angle parking:
1. Baltimore Avenue in the Crossroads
2. 62nd Terrace in front of Cosentino's
Existing head-in angle parking will be flipped and back-in will be tested to see if the world ends.

Back-in angled parking
this is pretty interesting news, I think this is worth its own thread.
KC Region is all part of the same animal regardless of state and county lines.
Think on the Regional scale.

If the two pilot tests go well, it will also be required on 5th Street in Columbus Park with Zimmer's redevelopment project. So far, every city that has tried it has kept it. Once you go back-in, you don't go back.
Re: Back-in angled parking
There has been quite a ruckus about the CP plan. While it's clear that everyone who has tried it has found it safer, some people just can't handle change. I won't mention Deb's name, but you might guess who some of them are.dangerboy wrote: If the two pilot tests go well, it will also be required on 5th Street in Columbus Park with Zimmer's redevelopment project. this sounds like a great license retention test
Re: Back-in angled parking
I've tried angle parking on a few projects and I am always baffled by the extra wide lanes that the traffic engineers want on the lane adjacent to the parking lane. Does anyone know if those extra lane width requirements would go away with this method?
I'm not surprised to hear there's opposition to it. The leadership in this town is baffling.

Yes, they go away for the most part.cdm2p wrote: I've tried angle parking on a few projects and I am always baffled by the extra wide lanes that the traffic engineers want on the lane adjacent to the parking lane. Head-in requires a big buffer area between the parking and the travel lane - because drives have less visibility when backing into oncoming traffic. Back-in needs less of a buffer so the whole street can be narrower.
Re: Back-in angled parking
the city is finally moving forward with a pilot project for back-in angled parking along the west side of mcgee between truman and 20th.

I was looking at some European city on Google maps streetview and noticed they have this back-angled parking there.
If it is European, then it's socialist and must be stopped.

There is no fifth destination.

As someone who is spatially impaired, I can envision more than a few fender-benders.
Re: Back-in angled parking
Heading to Brickfast on Saturday, I drove down the street and had a "what is wrong with these cars" experience, as I pulled along side the back in spaces. I really had to think about it, especially since someone had parked front first into one of the spaces. Either they drove into the space from north bound traffic or they pulled a hellacious u-turn to get into it.

I never cease to be amazed by the people who maneuver their cars to back into the head-in angle parking in the Cosentino's garage. What's the point?loftguy wrote: Heading to Brickfast on Saturday, I drove down the street and had a "what is wrong with these cars" experience, as I pulled along side the back in spaces.
