You seriously closed that thread?

Post by GRID »

I get it, I'm done with it too.  Just know that I do what I can to improve the image of KC and with that comes changing people's image of Kansas to something better than the imagine and to a lesser degree Missouri.  But the bottom line is KC has a pretty piss poor image and I was trying to show that with actual, unedited feedback from people on the east coast and I "thought" this forum was about grown ups that could discuss topics concerning KC other than beer, jayhawks and when the area will freaking ever get a trader joes.  I didn't start the "flame war", you people cant handle the true image of Kansas, so you began to rip on MO and manufactured the typical Kansan image of MO as rebuttal (hicks, no teeth etc).

So, I will let you guys get back to your jokester bus rapid transit that should be running down metcalf every hour in 2020 as you live in some sort of lala land about KC and its image has no impact on the city.

Good luck with that trader joes, once you get one, the forum should really take off!

Funny though how none of your co-workers really had much of anything negative to say about any of the three locations- nothing like you and MoMan like to put out.  Thus I think your own research kind of upends your theory.

Perhaps everybody should poll their fellow workers as to how they view DC.

I just don't see this huge national negative image of KC that Grid seems to think exists.  Granted I don't travel as much as he does, but whenever I do, most people always seem interested to know what KC is like.

My cousins from LA and San Diego where in town for a week last summer and they had never been to KC and they both thought it was a gorgeous city with a lot of diverse things to do.  I took them to a Royals game (they thought Kauffman was amazing), PnL district, Plaza and Westport.  They were blown away by the PnL district (and the Jone's pool) and couldn't believe you could walk around with an open container, listen to live music and go back and forth between bars.  Plus there was a concert going on at the Sprint Center, so the place was packed.  They definitely liked the lack of traffic and thought it was easy to get around and they couldn't believe the size of house you can get for the $.  My cousin in LA is actually considering moving here because she is tired of apartment living and as a physical therapist, she can pretty much find a job anywhere.

That's really my point.  KC has so much to offer, yet everybody is so worried about "not having to impress" that they don't.  My point has always been that KC is one of the better cities in the country, but if you ask 100 people about the city, it would rank below or right with places like Boise, Toledo, Richmond etc.  It's Topeka with some shitty sports teams and bbq.

Once you get people to KC, they are always amazed.  I have never seen a person that wasn't pleasantly surprised, if not totally shocked after showing them KC.  Just showing a handful of photos to people out here to people really changes their perception of the city dramatically, which most tend to assume is a smaller, pretty boring city in a very ugly, flat, treeless brown part of Kansas.

I mean KC is 2 million people and has things like the Nelson, the Plaza, the Liberty Memorial, the new performing arts center, world class stadium facilities, an incredible arts scene, some great museums all set in the green rolling forested hills of eastern KS and western MO, yet few people past Columbia or Wichita know it.

Yet everybody knows about the rock and roll hall of fame in Cleveland.

I think it comes down to marketing and I simply think KC could do a little more to establish a "KC" identity and try to get away from the Kansas stereotypes that it seems to take on.

But I understand.  F em if they don't know about KC.  Right?

If you had steered your conversation towards how KC can positively market itself, rather than continue with potshots at Kansas, the thread would not have been closed.

Sounds like you stopped trying to understand the point GRID was making once you read his data confirming that Kansas has an image problem.  Because his data DID confirm that Kansas was generally seen as an arid, brown, flat land of tornadoes.

And how many times does GRID have to add that he doesn't agree with the stereotype before you and WSPanic and the other whiners stop bashing him?  If you think his posts are uninteresting or redundant, DON'T READ THEM.

I was posting what people think of KC, MO and KS, and since not all the KS stuff was flattering, these are the "potshots" I get in return:

God forbid they're linked to the state of Kansas...what with all of our porn shops lining the interstates.

KCMETRO

The "noodling" shit

WSPanic

Sorry, people across the country don't think of noodling or porn shops when they think of "Missery".

But they do think of all the things posted when they think of Kansas (which = KC).  "I" am not saying Kansas is like what people imagine, although this image of Kansas people have is not really something I want people to think of when they think of my hometown, so I correct them or educate them. (when I can).

I understand, this is extremely difficult to comprehend and accept though.

Look, we're not rehashing the thread.

There is some value in discussing the image problem KC has in being linked to Kansas. But the value is very, very low because it is what it is. Its not going to change. Kansas City is not changing its name. Kansas is not changing its name. So there is little value in harping on it.

And whatever low value such a discussion has is grossly outweighed by the flame-war it creates. Both Missourians and Kansans are culpable sure. Which is even more reason why any such discussion is going to inevitably lead to a flame war.

So if you want to raise a discussion about any perceived image problems Kansas City has, please keep it positive towards what KC can do to improve its image. I think that would be a wonderful discussion. But any comments that go towards disparaging one state or the other is going to lead to another flame war and will likely be dumpsterized in short time.
