as far as i know, Old Hyde Park is Armour to 43rd (?), Broadway to Gillham.

Hyde Park is 31st to Cleaver, Gillham to Troost.  North Hyde Park is between 31st and Armour, Central Hyde Park is between Armour and 39th, and South Hyde Park is between 39th and Cleaver.

Kind of like how that one porn shop that seems to always be advertised in the Pitch is billed as "on the extreme eastern edge of the Plaza," even though it's apparently on Troost.

i have ADT because i feel like the presence of the ADT signs (and, if the perp looks through the window, the keypads) will deter 95% of would-be burglars.  if someone is going to break into a house that clearly has an alarm, then it's out of my hands.  i just hope no one is in the house when it happens, because i will go ballistic on that motherfucker.

A simple American flag will do just as well as an ADT sign.

I have heard that it is worth the extra fee to go for the wireless phone connection, as apparently your smarter burgler will just cut the phone line on the side of the house before entering.

What am I missing here?  I have ADT that I just got installed two months ago.  When my system stops communicating with my landline, ADT calls my cell phone to see if everything is ok.  If they don't reach me, they call the wifey cell, then my dad cell before dispatching police.  What's the problem?

A confederate flag perhaps?  Or proud member of the NRA sticker on your front door?

this is the unfortunate thing, though it's understandable.  after ADT calls your cell a few times, then your wife, then your dad, then the police, by the time the police actually show up (if they do) the perp will be long gone.  i think of my ADT alarm as prevention more than anything - i.e. hopefully the ADT sign will cause the would-be burglar to just think "eh, fuck it" and move on to a more vulnerable house.  also, i would hope that the incredibly loud siren would cause the burglar to be pretty nervous and leave the house quickly without taking much.

that said, we really don't have much to steal, unless the burglar wants to run off with my 20" iMac under his arm.

True.  Although from what I've seen from police response times I'm not sure it would be any better if they called the police immediately!  From setting it off accidentally several times I can attest to the loudness of that damn keypad siren.  It hurts like hell.  Which is good, because city codes now prohibit external sirens on residential property (according to the installers).  My neighbors said they can hear it in their front yards though, even though the keypad inside the house is what's making the noise.

Yes, smart burglars will cut the phone line.  To mitigate this, you can get a cellular backup connection, or some alarm monitoring companies can monitor your phone line to detect the cut.

Alarms don't deter experienced burglars.  They can be in and out long before the police show up.  I saw it happen last year when a neighbor's house was robbed.  The criminal continued robbing the house while the alarm was sounding.  It was only after I came outside with the phone to my ear and saw his get-away driver did he actual stop and flee.  I thought the police arrived in a reasonable amount of time, yet the burglar would have been successful if I hadn't interrupted him.

I have always set mine up so that the company calls the police if there is no answer on the landline inside the house. It wastes time to have them calling 4-5 numbers while a robbery is progress.  So by the time they call my cell to tell me the alarm is going off, the police are already on the way.

In our case, they cut the phone line, but we did have a cellular backup.  This does absolutely no good if the panel and keypad are integrated, as ours was.  Tear off the panel = no alarm signal sent.  ADT did not monitor any kind of system heartbeat in our particular case.

The keypad and alarm panel definitely have to be separate.  The integrated setup is the main drawback of the cheap and/or DIY alarm systems.  The panel should be in a locked cabinet in the basement.

I am sure they will show up out of their honest interest in community support and improving neighborhoods.  &&&&  Just hope they don't let anyone's pit bull out of the back yard while they are passing through.
