Original poster said they lost it due to a "technicality." That sounds like it could be the city doing something or, perhaps they submitted a late renewal (or something along those lines)? Just saying - the poster never said it wasn't their own fault.mean wrote: Driving out business: awesome.

If it doesn't have street-level retail, it's an abortion.

Re: The Mango Room
That was the PB&J space for City Seen (scene?). I went there a couple times - mid 90's - then I don't think there was anything in that space until the Mango Room.
Where was Winsteads? In one of the food courts?

Re: The Mango Room
Ah yes, City Scene. Vague memories of that place. I remember Mezzaluna as well. We even went to their location out south a couple times after they shut down that space.WSPanic wrote: Was Mezzaluna right before Mango Room in that spot? Re: The Mango Room
Perhaps Ironic to this conversation, the husband and wife team that ran Mango Room were both PB&J expats. I remember reading that they had met while working at one of the PB&J restaurants - I want to say Grand Street. Though the concept was a departure, I thought the Mango Room always had a noticeable PB&J feel to it.

Re: The Mango Room
The monumental net gain in bars, clubs, restuarants, and $$$ that P&L is bringing to DTKC easily offsets the attrition of a few local pre-P&L establishments. It's not even worth discussion.mean wrote: Driving out business: awesome.
Personally, I liked the Mango Room and I'm sorry to see them go. But, I also know that with the rebirth of DTKC (thanks exclusively to Cordish), that corner parcel will be occupied by summer's end.

Re: The Mango Room
I wouldn't read too much into the Mango Room closing. It probably has little to do with the P&L or downtown conditions. Restaurants go out of business quite a bit.
Interesting about Hereford House. I'm all for preserving buildings, but that is one building I would not mind seeing bulldozed.

As of the 18th, liquor control still lists Mango as an active liquor license??

Re: The Mango Room
A friend told me at work today that she made a reservation the morning of the day they closed. The gentleman took the reservation, then called back in the evening to tell her they decided to close. WHAT?! They didn't even know the morning of? Haha...
He told her they were looking to move to Leawood, out past 135th.
YIKES....Big loss for them. Bad move IMO.

I only went their once but was not impressed with their food, service or decor. No big loss, in my opinion. When I went the server told me the special of the day was oxtail and how great it was. Maybe, that's someone elses thing, just not mine.

I'm sure if Thelma has anything remotely juicy, she will make sure to get some hack Pitch writer to turn some story into a quasi-expose...she has been very vocal to the media in the past.

Well if they couldn't serve oxtail downtown, they sure as hell ain't going to sell it in Leawood. I liked their corn muffins, ribs, and martinis. Their ribs were out of this world.

Re: The Mango Room
I had the oxtail a couple of times and it was delicious! I'm truly sad to see them go, but I hope they fail miserably in Leawood. Personally, I would've preferred to see them move to 18th & Vine or the River Market, but I guess they wouldn't have been able to get a liquor license anywhere in KCMO. Maybe they should've tried North KC, Rosedale, Fairway, Mission or Prairie Village. It's not a smart move for the owner to move to an area that loves mediocre and upscale chains that they are familiar with dining.

Re: The Mango Room
Without Cordish, there would have been nothing for the taxpayers to subsidize. Perhaps, it would be more appropriate to attribute the rebirth to a combined effort between Cordish and the taxpayers. In the end, however, the taxpayers and city government had sat idly by and let DTKC deteriorate into a desolate ghost town. It took a developer like Cordish to turn things around.mean wrote: Fixed that for ya.
