AL'S SURPLUS is Closing!
AL'S SURPLUS is Closing!
I saw a billboard last night that said that Al's Surplus (officially National's Surplus) is closing. NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
My mom (who passed away 6 years ago) introduced me to this wonderful little shop. It has been a hidden jewel on the west end of Vivion Road. I can think of only one or two times when I went in there and didn't purchase something. I think about her everytime I shop there. I am so bummed...
I have many errands to run today, but I'll make sure I stop by there and find out why it is closing.

Re: AL'S SURPLUS is Closing!
Okay, I've got the scoop directly from Al himself. He's closing NationalAl's Surplus and then will reopen as a thrift store benefiting "animals in need" charities.
Here's the text from the flyer they have in the store:
The flyer goes on to say they will begin accepting donations on February 15th and then has a list of items they will and will not accept.
Al also said they would be having weekend pet adoptions.
I'm going to miss the way the store currently is because it is so unique. Do we really need another thrift store? May, maybe not. Knowing Al, it will continue to be a very unique place.

WHEN ONE DOOR CLOSES...
After 22 years of serving the best customers (and friends) in the world, I have decided to close NationAl's Surplus in order to pursue another dream.
ANOTHER IS OPENED!
May 15th we will open
OUR NEW THRIFT STORE BENEFITING "ANIMALS IN NEED" CHARITIES
SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE
We will continue to offer you the best deals & values possible: a combination of new and used deals, virtually a treasure hunt everyday. but now, the profits will be directed toward various "animal non-profit groups" throughout the city!

I like to wander through that place too.
There is no fifth destination.

I've never actually been. I have a friend who likes to go there every now and again. I just always see these funny billboards by the downtown airport.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
One of our favorite haunts. Lots of cool bargains to be had.
We took our 14 year old grandson there last summer. He was appalled. We loved it.

Are those businesses located in Northmoor, Kansas City, Gladstone, or Riverside?

Is it reopening somewhere else? I've been a customer for several years off and on. I'm betting he got more business when he was on 64th Street.acepiloto wrote: Lasus books on the other side of that strip is closing as well... As of May 1st.

I'm still not sure, on some things he puts Northmoor and on others he puts Riverside.FangKC wrote: Are those businesses located in Northmoor, Kansas City, Gladstone, or Riverside?
Nope... It appears that my wedding has drained them (j/k). Actually, he did better at this location, though one would think that he'd get better visibility on 64th street, especially now. But they tried to make everyone move out of that strip to build a costco or something, so much for that eh? Most of his business was done online, the brick and mortar store was mostly to bring in books, not to sell them.nota wrote:Is it reopening somewhere else? I don't mean to spam... But it seems a bit relevant.
Re: AL'S SURPLUS is Closing!
Yep-we patronized a lot of those businesses and they gradually left when their lease was up. Now most of them are empty and no Costco. As the rumor goes there was too much objection from the neighborhoods because they felt there wasn't enough parking for the planned place. We didn't miss it.acepiloto wrote: But they tried to make everyone move out of that strip to build a costco or something, so much for that eh? I don't mean to spam... But it seems a bit relevant.
