What businesses does midtown need?
What businesses does midtown need?
I love living in midtown because I have many of the resources I want and need within less than a 1 to 2 mile radius of where I live. What types of businesses would benefit the midtown area? For example to find a decent fabric store or bowling alley you have to drive out to Johnson County or way north of the river.

Wrong on the bowling alley! Parkway Lanes on Ward Parkway isn't far away. Northtown Bowl is even closer, only a few feet beyond the river. And Mission Bowl is such a fixture it feels more like Midtown than NE Joco.
Seriously, though... I vote for practical things like barbers, clothes, car dealers, sporting goods, etc.

Not sure what you're looking for in a decent fabric store, but Kaplan's on the Plaza is excellent (http://kaplansfabrics.com/)

I'm still amazed there isn't a major grocer in the area. With the traffic that goes through there, and the wealthy neighborhoods nearby, you'd think some one would have wised up and put a grocer somewhere on Main between 39th and 50th. I know there is Wild Oats, but I was thinking a mainstream grocer.

Ever heard of Marsh's Sunfresh? It's the busiest grocery store in the metro area...KCMax wrote: I'm still amazed there isn't a major grocer in the area.

Busiest in terms of traffic, but I'll bet not in sales.
Re: What businesses does midtown need?
QTs carry a fair amount of groceries these days. if i lived in midtown i would go there to avoid sunfresh.
Re: What businesses does midtown need?
brookside market is winnar. it takes 7 minutes to get there from west plaza, probably 10-15 from other points in midtown. not too bad.

When I say decent, I mean a good selection and reasonable prices.heatherkay wrote: Not sure what you're looking for in a decent fabric store, but Kaplan's on the Plaza is excellent

That is insane. I do not understand the hatred of Sunfresh. How in the world is QT better than Sunfresh? The higher prices on tiny packages of staple items?DaveKCMO wrote: QTs carry a fair amount of groceries these days. if i lived in midtown i would go there to avoid sunfresh.

OK folks, we already have enough threads on here bashing Sunfresh. If you feel the need to rant, please do it one of the existing anti-Sunfresh threads.
I'll suggest another business needed here in Midtown - Target. A Target store that is well-integrated in the neighborhood would be my biggest request. It would eliminate most of my trips outside the neighborhood.

Yea, I was thinking something more along the lines of one the way home for people commuting from downtown to Brookside, or within walking distance for people living on the Plaza, or staying at the Plaza.dangerboy wrote: Ever heard of Marsh's Sunfresh? Plus it seems Marsh's could use some competition.
Re: What businesses does midtown need?
agreed. that would be awesome. where could a Target go? is there room for one in Midtown Marketplace somewhere?dangerboy wrote: I'll suggest another business needed here in Midtown - Target. also, for the 50000th time, trader joe's (or whole foods) needs to take over the osco store at 39th and main!!!

We went to a Target in DT Mpls a couple of years ago. It was on multiple levels with an escalator and a cart escalator. If they'd be willing to build up on a smaller footprint, I can think of several locations, including Midtown Mktplace, where you could have a standard (not Super) Target.
