Denver Union Station

this PDF shows denver's revised plan for turning their union station into a multi-modal transportation hub by 2012. i envision something like this happening for our own station once we get the first tracks laid for light rail. denver had a lot of naysayers who thought this major reconfiguration couldn't be done, but it turns out the final proposal netted two more tracks for commuter rail and more space for buses.

fantastic, i love how denver is embracing their historic station. kansas city could possibly be on the same track...all hope is lost for st. louis though.

This is a very exciting plan, and one in which Kansas City should pay attention and try to emulate. I've always admired European cities for how integrated their transportation networks between their urban centers.  It makes tourism so easy.

Notice how the plan also includes their bus terminal near the train station as well.  I've been advocating the same thing for moving our passenger bus terminal to Union Station.  I think it's the first step in building a intermodal transportation hub at Union Station, which in addition to a museum and retail center, should have that as a purpose.

I think one of the things I miss most about New York City is how easy it is to get around there without having to have a car.  I even helped a friend move once using nothing but taxis.   :P

i'd like to see scaled comparisons of kansas citys and denvers union stations...denvers always appears smaller, but the taller denver skyline is closer.

There is no comparison,  KC's blows Denver's away in every aspect.

KC blows  most cities away when it comes to comparing train stations.  Few can beat ours.

i definitely wish i would have lived during the era of big rail, though i probably would have thought it "constraining" or something and would have rather ridden around in an automobile. stoopid monkey.

KC's Union Station is definitely the superior building.  The only thing I like better about Denver's is that you can walk out of it, across the street, and you're in downtown.  KC's makes for better pictures, but it's a bit isolate from the bussle of downtown (in a walkable sense).  You could walk out of Denver's station and walk to the free 16th St. Mall shuttle and get to anywhere in downtown easily.

It'll be interesting to see how this all turns out.

It sure felt smaller when I had the misfortune of waiting 12 hours for a train there in 2001.

I grew up in Denver and think that the Union Station rennovation project and transportation hub is an excellent transition, but Kansas City's Union Station is by far much nicer and more architecturally appealling.  I have been in Cincinnati's as well and it too is nice.
