The Shawnee City Council on Monday approved a preliminary development plan for a boulevard-style office and retail center near Shawnee Mission Parkway and Kansas 7.
The design of Shawnee Crossings Office-Retail Center, to be centered on 68th Street west of Hilltop Drive, is to resemble Massachusetts Street in downtown Lawrence, with street-side trees, wide pedestrian sidewalks and angled on-street parking.
A combination of one-, two- and three-story buildings will comprise the 10-lot development that George Butler Associates designed for Shawnee Holdings, LLC. The tallest building will overlook a statue or fountain in an open space at the center of the property.
The development is projected to have 234,000 square feet of building space. Uses will include retail, restaurants, medical offices and general office space.
The first phase of construction is to include three lots near the center of the development and probably will be under way by winter of 2004 or spring 2005. The council approved rezoning the site from commercial highway to planned office commercial.
