Re: your favorite "under the radar" places
Chez Charlie's is not quite like it used to be. The Friday night DJ (even though his taste is impeccable) was about the last straw for me. But I have never had an unfriendly, too-cool-for-school experience there, and have felt a more palpable discomfort at Grinders on occasion. I certainly think its on the artfuck radar now, and has been for a couple of years.

Re: your favorite "under the radar" places
By creepy, I meant eerily similar to my list of regular, twice-weekly haunts. Not that you are creepy. More like its creepy that someone would make the exact same list I would...Creepy? What the!? How are those places creepy?

Ah, well, some people don't like dealing with BS, especially when they're spending money.

the Hy-Vee salad bar..... but if you're not over 60 you may get some odd looks and the occasional snicker (between intakes from the oxygen tank) from the regulars.

Hey I love the Hy-Vee Deli. They have real good food. Not every day that you can sit and eat in a grocery store.

No, I was not serious. I was just using that word to make a comment on the ridiculous punishment/EXTREME!!11/destruction theme that many popular liquor-derived drinks seem to have.KCLofts wrote: Seriously? Don't think that's a drink I'll be trying.

Re: your favorite "under the radar" places
It's a total hole in the wall place, half market, half kitchen. The food is delicious and prepared right where you can see it (by at least one grandma), and of course it's super cheap. Really good breakfast standards like eggs & chorizo, beans, tortillas, and hey, throw in a chile relleno or two. Some friends swear by their dinner menu although I've never tried the food after 11 AM... although some of the GIANT simmering pots on the stove have made me want to go back & check it out.catfish1812 wrote: Any more detail on this. M&M Deli is at 31st and Woodside -- just off 71 Highway. Great sandwiches and pastries...locally owned for decades.chrizow wrote: what/where is M&M's Deli?
Good call on someone with Pot Pie....fabulous place that is under the radar in spite of being in Westport.

Bobby Baker's has to be one of the best "under the radar holes" around. Another is Dave's Stagecoach over in Westport.....similar to an extent, but Dave's might be a little more shitty. I love them both and look forward to visiting whenever I can...and to hide from reality for a few hours. Cheers!

Re: your favorite "under the radar" places
In addition to my two cents on my last post, here is is story from Dave's Stagecoach.
I was happily buzzed on a summer night sometime during 1998. My old girlfriend was working behind the bar, so we all know everything was cool with that hookup. It was right around dusk when a loud dragging noise erupted outside. We all knew a wreck of some sort happened right out in front of the bar. Natural curiosity got the best of the few patrons, so we took a peek outside to see the damage. To my utter amazement, my S-10 had been struck by a car that had "fallen" off the tow truck while in tow!!! For a second it didn't even register!! How in the hell does that even happen? There it was...sitting all smashed up against the left rear of my poor little truck. Massive streaks of dark blue paint ruined my paintjob, not to mention the complete smashing of my tailgate and rear left light. The cops told me they had never seen something like that happen. I just shook my head and waited until the police report had been finished. The tow company paid for all expenses and I was happy.
