greasy suburban KC dives from an earlier era - that are still in operation?

People say they enjoy Kansas City. Find out why.

please tell me the Fun House in raytown still has the miniature merry-go-rounds that require no quarters - only the flip of a light switch?

Oh yeah.  My 5 year old loves to stand up on the seat while it goes around.

there was Burger Delite and Dairy Delite at 75 and Troost (now a gas station).  there was also a drive-in on the Plaza across Brush Creek from Winstead's.

fun house in raytown was great when older.

and of course, when one turned 18 there was always Zepi's Pizza(?) on Metcalf for pizza and 3.2 beer, or kansas koolaid as we called it.
I may be right.  I may be wrong.  But there is a lot of gray area in-between.

It is easier to get drunk on regular Kool-Aid than 3.2.

Yes it does.

I'll be there.

Godfathers in Raytown is still an untouched 1982 gem.

We used to ride our bikes from 85th and Sterling all the way to Banister Mall, Fun House, Downtown Raytown, 7-eleven, the old QT on Gregory, and the QT on 50 Highway.

I rode my bike to South Middle every day for three years. You lazy little bastard. :)

chrizow wrote: Bahua and i were discussing a very specific sort of establishment this morning.  there are many ways to describe such a place, but the most vivid way for me to evoke this sort of place is this:

the sort of place a child growing up in the late 70s or 80s would have gone to after a saturday soccer or baseball game.  soccer trophy parties or youth birthday parties may have been hosted here as well.

characteristics:

* decor frozen in a very specific era, such as 1968, 1972, or 1979.
* a generic, VERY greasy menu of burgers, fries, chili dogs, maybe pizza, maybe gyros.
* the menu will almost certainly be rendered in changeable black letters on a backlit menu, often with a Pepsi logo from another era on the top
* located in a suburban area which dates from the 50s through the early 70s.
* a couple of really random old arcade games (ZAXXON, Ms. Pac Man, Bad Dudes, etc)
* large soda selection, including, in Bahua's words "root beer without a brand name"
* "circa-1973 ads for frozen treats that haven't been available since 1975"

and so on.

i would have to imagine that places like this still exist in the older suburban areas of KC.

does anyone know what i am getting at?

ALSO: if the nostalgic pizza/burger joint of your childhood is now closed, please tell us about it.  i love this kind of stuff.

Maxwell's in buckner, missouri. worth the drive to get the tacos.

I live fairly close to the Taco Via at 95th and Antioch and it hasn't changed in the 10 years I have been going there.  And, from what I hear (friends) it's never changed.  I have friends that will drive 20 minutes out of their way to goto that specific Taco Via.

And, if you are going to Taco Via, you might as well stop in at George's Pizza (formerly Leo's).  It's in the same shopping area directly east of Taco Via.  It fits the bill and is really good.

Did anyone else go to the Taco Via at 75th and Metcalf (Northeast corner) before they moved accross 75th St.

Gas station and KFC there now.

Loved that place.

Me too, it's a short walk from my house. This thread has been enough to compel me to check it out. I will report back.

It has been years since I made a Humdinger run.  Always a trip to step in there.  The family that used to own it (maybe still does) really cared about the quality of product that they used.

Burgers for sure and the italian steak sandwich used to be awesome.

Wow, you can go inside!? I always assumed it was just a drive-in.

Johnny C's Pizza at 75th & Nieman and as an added bonus there is the Trailridge Cinema next door which also hasn't realized it's not 1982 anymore. For $20 you can have a pizza, a beer and wander next door and catch a movie.

Is that related to the Johnny C's on 5th Street in downtown KCK? They have a sandwich called "North of the Boarder" [sic] which makes me cry tears of joy.
